Wide three-field aluminium window with two slim mullions along a Dubai villa living room wall, garden and pool beyond the glass

Triple-panel windows

Three fields under one head is how a wide opening gets glazed without any single pane growing past what a crew can lift. The two mullions between the fields carry the wind, and on a run this wide it is their deflection — how far each post bows under pressure before it springs back — that the calculation is really about, because a post that flexes too far pulls its gaskets away from the glass and the window starts to whistle and leak long before anything breaks. The arrangement that suits most rooms keeps the centre fixed for the view and puts the opening leaves on the flanks, within reach and clear of the furniture.

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

How a three-field window is engineered

  • Wind case taken for the actual floor A villa and a tower are different cases
  • Mullion spacing set by the calculation Deflection ahead of appearance
  • Sill level checked end to end A long run exposes a sloping opening
  • Expansion allowed for at the jambs Aluminium moves as the day heats
  • Delivered in sections where access asks Joined and sealed in the opening
  • Set, sealed and every leaf adjusted Each leaf closed and checked in turn

The honest downside

Where a three-field window is the wrong fit

Three fields means two posts in the view. On a wall facing the sea or a garden, the mullions are the first thing the eye crosses, and they cannot be thinned past what the wind calculation allows.

The usual layout also puts a swinging leaf at each end of the wall, so both corners of the room have to stay clear of an arc — furniture, curtains, a sofa pulled up to the glass. And the fixed centre, the widest pane, is hard to wash from inside once you are above the ground floor.

Where neither end of the wall has room for a leaf to swing, a sliding window keeps the width usable without anything entering the room. A three-field window stays the practical answer for a wide wall that needs a view in the middle and air from both ends.

Consider instead Sliding windows

Frequently asked questions

Two reasons, and they point the same way. The middle field is normally the widest, so a sash there would be the heaviest leaf in the window and would swing straight into the path people walk through the room. Leaving it fixed also lets both mullions do their structural work uninterrupted, and puts the handles where somebody standing beside the window can actually reach them.

It is the amount a post bends when the wind pushes on the glass either side of it. Some movement is normal and designed for; too much and the sealing gaskets stop being compressed at the middle of the span, which is where an owner first notices a whistling noise in a strong wind or a damp line after a heavy downpour. Limiting that movement is what sizes the posts and decides whether they need steel inside.

It depends entirely on the route into the room, not on the workshop. A wide frame has to turn a corner in a corridor, clear a lift door or come up a stair, and where it cannot we make it in sections and couple them in the opening with a sealed joint that is designed for it. We check the route at the survey, because finding out on delivery day is a bad way to learn it.

It does, measurably, and a run this wide is where it starts to show. Metal grows as it warms through the day and contracts overnight, so the detail leaves it room to do that at the jambs and at any coupling. Build it tight against unyielding blockwork instead and the frame has nowhere to go: it bows, the sashes stop closing sweetly and the perimeter sealant tears.
