Aluminium sliding door with slim charcoal frames open from a Dubai villa onto a stone terrace, one leaf parked behind the other

Sliding doors

A sliding door parks its leaves instead of swinging them. Each leaf rides on carriages inside a track and travels sideways past its neighbour, so nothing sweeps into the room and the floor in front of the glass stays furnished. What separates a door that glides from one that needs a shoulder is entirely underfoot: the bottom track carries the weight, collects the sand off the terrace and has to let a squall back out again. Everything above it follows from how that track is drawn.

We produce

Curtain walls, structural and semi-structural glazing, ventilated and cassette facades. The system carries its own weight and the wind load of a tall building, and the glass line stays unbroken across the elevation.

How we set a sliding door up

  • Track count chosen against the opening How much glass you want out of the way
  • Finished floor level taken at survey Tile height decides the sill detail
  • Drainage route agreed with the terrace Weeps have to discharge, not pond
  • Carriages matched to the glazing weight Heavier leaves move to twin bogies
  • Leaves cut, glazed and hung in Dubai One factory, no import wait
  • Every leaf run through at handover Adjustment is part of the fit

Partitions

Office partitions made of aluminium profiles are a simple, quick, and cost-effective way to organise efficient zoning within a large space, while maintaining interior unity.

The honest downside

What a sliding door gives up

A standard sliding door does not clear its whole opening. On a two-track frame one leaf parks behind the other, so about half the width stays glazed even with the door open, and extra tracks deepen the frame.

The seal is the other compromise. The leaves close onto brushes and fins rather than squeezing a gasket, so a little more air and fine dust pass at the sill and the interlock than on a hinged leaf. The bottom track also collects sand that must be brushed or vacuumed out to keep the leaves gliding.

If the brief is a wall that opens completely onto a terrace or a pool deck, a bi-fold door stacks its leaves to one side and clears nearly the full width. A sliding door remains the better answer where nothing may swing into the room, and where large panes and an uncluttered view matter while the door is shut.

Consider instead Bi-fold doors

Frequently asked questions

On a two-track door, about half of it: one leaf parks behind the other and both stay inside the frame. Three and four-track arrangements stack more leaves to one side and clear proportionally more, at the cost of a deeper frame at the head and the sill. If the brief is a genuinely empty opening — a whole living-room wall gone — the honest answer is a folding door or a pocket, not another track.

It settles in the bottom track, gets rolled under the wheels and grinds the running surface. A door that arrived gliding starts needing a push, and that is grit rather than a fault. We specify a groove shallow and open enough to brush or vacuum out, stainless carriages that survive being dragged through dust, and leaves that lift free so the wheels can be swapped in place instead of the door being replaced.

A conventional slider closes onto brushes and fins along the track rather than compressing a gasket the way a hinged leaf does, so there is always a little more air movement at the sill. Where the room is cooled hard and faces the sea breeze, the mechanism to ask for is lift-and-slide, which sets the leaf down onto a continuous seal. On a standard slider we improve the interlock and the wiper set — and we tell you plainly which of the two your room needs.

It can be, provided it is specified for that. A slider is normally defeated by lifting the leaf out of its track, not by attacking the lock, so the parts that count are blocks in the head that stop the leaf rising, a hook bolt in the meeting stile instead of a plain latch, and a laminated pane that holds together when it breaks. That set is worth including wherever the door faces a garden, a podium or a shared path.
