Thermal break doors

A thermal break door is defined by something you never see. Inside the profile the aluminium is cut through and rejoined with polyamide bars, so the outer shell standing in the sun and the inner face you put your hand on are no longer the same piece of metal. Aluminium moves heat readily; an unbroken profile in an Emirates summer hands the outside temperature straight to the room, where it works against the air conditioning all day, while its outer face, chilled from the room side, gathers condensation on humid mornings. The break interrupts that path — but only where it runs without a single metal crossing, which is why the threshold matters more than the brochure.

  • cut and rejoined what happens to the metal
  • polyamide bars what bridges the gap
  • frame, leaf and sill where it must be continuous

How we check a break is doing its job

  • Continuity traced round the whole frame Any metal crossing it undoes the rest
  • Threshold detailed with the break in mind One solid sill undoes a broken frame
  • Spacer specified with the glazing unit The edge of the pane is the weak line
  • Fixings and packers reviewed One steel bracket can bridge everything
  • Sealing and drainage drawn together Insulated and airtight are separate jobs
  • Condensation risk read room by room Hard-cooled rooms facing humid air matter most

Partitions

Office partitions made of aluminium profiles are a simple, quick, and cost-effective way to organise efficient zoning within a large space, while maintaining interior unity.

The honest downside

What a thermal break will not do

A thermal break interrupts the heat path through the frame, and only through the frame. On a largely glazed door most of the sun's heat arrives through the glass, so a broken profile with ordinary glazing on a west elevation still leaves the room warm; the glass unit and the shading do the larger share of the work.

Nor can the break fix air leaks or a solid threshold, and it adds cost, depth and weight to the profile. Between two spaces that share the same unconditioned air — a store and a yard, a plant room and a roof — it has nothing to interrupt.

For doors that open between two uncooled spaces, a non-insulated door is slimmer, lighter and does the same job for less. A thermal break is the right specification for every door with a cooled room on one side, and it has to be chosen at the start, because it cannot be added later.

Consider instead Non-insulated doors

Frequently asked questions

Two separate aluminium extrusions and, between them, a pair of shaped polyamide bars rolled into grooves in each. The bars are structural — they hold the two shells at a fixed distance and carry the glazing load between them — and they are also poor conductors, which is the whole point. Cut the profile across and you can see it: metal, plastic, an air cavity, plastic, metal. Nothing about it is a coating or an insert added later; the profile was designed around it.

It matters more, not less, and for a reason that is easy to miss. In Europe the break stops warmth escaping; here it stops heat arriving, and it does so against a temperature difference that runs all day for months at a time. The effect shows up in two places you notice: the frame near the glass stops being unpleasant to touch in the afternoon, and the air conditioning stops fighting a strip of hot metal built into the wall. On a large glazed elevation that is not a marginal difference.

Because it is the one part of the frame that also has to be walked on, take a seal, drain water and sit at the level of the finished floor — and the easy way to satisfy all of that is a solid aluminium section. That solid piece then joins the outside to the inside underneath the door and quietly short-circuits every other broken profile in the set. A thermally broken threshold costs more and complicates the drainage detail, which is exactly why it is the first thing to check on a quotation.

No, and anyone offering it should be asked how. The break is inside the extrusion, formed when the profile is made — it is not a strip that can be added to a finished door. What can be improved on an existing door is everything around it: worn gaskets replaced, a better glazing unit fitted where the rebate allows, drainage cleared, hinges reset so the leaf compresses evenly again. That is genuine, and it is repair work rather than a thermal upgrade, which is how we quote it.
