Over a parked car the thing doing the damage is not water. Sun on the bodywork, and through the windscreen onto a dashboard and a steering wheel, is what a driveway cover is really for; the handful of wet days a year are almost incidental. That reorders the design. The deck wants to be closed rather than slatted, it wants to reach far enough out that the low afternoon sun cannot simply come in underneath, and it has to clear the whole car without a leg standing where a door swings.

The honest downside
The limits of a carport
A cover takes the sun off the car, not the sand. A shamal still coats the bodywork, and fine dust drifts into the sheltered corner under the deck, so the car and the driveway beneath it need washing much as before.
It also changes the front of the house. In Emaar and Dubai Holding communities (Nakheel, Meraas, Dubai Properties) a driveway cover always needs written approval (NOC) before work starts, and the developer may set its colour and height; other communities have their own rules, and we prepare the drawings for the approval. And a closed deck close to the villa takes daylight from any window behind it — often a majlis or a ground-floor bedroom.
Where the cover would stand in front of windows, or double as a sitting area, an adjustable louvered roof lets you choose between shade and light. A solid carport remains the right answer over a driveway used for parking, where full shadow on the car is the whole point.

It removes the part of the heat you can do something about. Most of what makes a parked car unbearable is direct sunlight landing on the panels and pouring through the glass onto dark plastic, and shade takes that away entirely — the dashboard, the wheel and the seat belt buckles stop reaching the temperatures that make people flinch. The air inside still warms up to roughly what the air outside is doing, so the car is not cool, it is ordinary. It also spares the paint, the trim and the rubber the ultraviolet that ages them.
Only if the wall is genuinely structural, and on a lot of villas here the outer surface is not. Render, a rain screen or an insulated cladding layer will happily take a bolt and then transfer the load into something that was never meant to carry it — usually announcing itself as a crack a season later. So we open up the build-up and find what is actually behind it. Where a cantilever is sound the driveway stays completely clear; where it is not, the answer is slim legs along the boundary, not legs between the cars.
In a gutter along the low edge and down a pipe to whatever drain already exists, which sounds obvious until you have seen the alternative. A deck with no gutter tips its whole surface area onto the driveway in one line, and in this climate that arrives as a slick of accumulated dust that dries into a stain across the paving and, worse, a wet strip where people step out of the car. We set the fall, position the gutter on the side away from where anyone walks, and take the pipe down inside a leg.
Wide enough for two cars side by side in most driveways, and the limit is a trade rather than a fixed figure. The span is carried by a beam along the front edge, and the further that beam reaches the deeper it has to be, so a very wide opening starts eating the headroom you were trying to protect. Where the driveway is wider still, the fix is usually a leg pushed out to the boundary or a second beam running back to the wall — anywhere but the strip where a door opens.
