French doors

French doors are a matched pair of glazed leaves that both open, hung on opposite jambs and meeting in the middle with nothing between them. The trick is in the second leaf: it carries bolts that shoot up into the head and down into the sill, so it behaves like a piece of frame until the day you release it, and the working leaf simply locks into its edge. What you get for that arrangement is an opening with no mullion standing in the view — the reason the detail has outlived every fashion it was born in.

  • a matched pair leaves in the opening
  • shoot bolts how the second leaf holds
  • glazed to the sill how much of it is glass

The details that make a pair work outdoors

  • Whether both leaves are actually used That alone decides the hardware set
  • Swing arcs drawn over the furniture Two leaves need two clear sweeps
  • Centre joint detailed at the threshold Water looks for the middle of a pair
  • Insect screens planned from the start A pair takes side-opening screens
  • Hold-backs or a closer against gusts A caught leaf breaks its own hinges
  • Finish matched to the window line The pair sits in the same facade

The honest downside

When French doors are the wrong fit

Two leaves that both open need two clear sweeps. Opened inward they cross the floor where a sofa or a dining table would stand; opened outward they need terrace depth and catch every gust, so hold-backs or closers become essential on an exposed elevation.

The centre joint is the other weak point. With no post, the pair seals on an overlapping stile, and that is where driven rain and fine dust look for a way in first. A fully glazed pair on a bare south or west wall also puts a lot of glass at eye level into the afternoon sun.

Where the room is tight, the terrace is shallow or the wall faces open sun and wind, a sliding door keeps the width clear of swinging leaves. French doors remain the right choice for shaded courtyards and covered terraces, where both leaves are actually opened and a view with no centre post is the point.

Frequently asked questions

Two things, and they are about intention as much as ironmongery. A French pair is fully glazed and symmetrical — both leaves are the same width, both are meant to be opened, and the design exists to put light and a garden into a room. A general double door is usually a wide leaf you use and a narrow one you unbolt when the sofa arrives. The hardware overlaps, the purpose does not, and that difference drives everything from the leaf widths to where the handles sit.

The second leaf becomes the post. Its bolts throw into a keep in the head and another in the sill, locking it to the structure top and bottom, and the working leaf then throws its own bolts into the edge of that leaf. So the load path in a wind is leaf to leaf to frame to wall, exactly as it would be through a mullion — only the mullion is removable. The keeps are the part that matters, and they are fixed into the frame rather than into plaster.

Yes, and it is worth deciding at the drawing stage rather than afterwards. A pair opening outward takes hinged or side-sliding screens on the inside face; a pair opening inward takes them outside. Either way the screen needs its own track or frame with somewhere to sit that does not collide with the leaves or the handles. Screens for our doors come from our sister brand Mosquito Nets UAE, so the two sets are drawn together instead of one being made to fit around the other.

They make sense where the elevation is shaded — a courtyard, a deep covered terrace, a garden with mature planting — because a fully glazed pair is a lot of glass at eye level, and the whole point is to look through it. On a bare south or west wall the same pair will need a solar-control unit before the room is comfortable, and even then the shading in front of the door does more good than anything in the glass. We discuss the orientation before the glazing is quoted rather than after.
