Bronze doors

Bronze on a modern aluminium door is often an anodised finish rather than a colour sprayed onto it. Anodising grows a hard oxide layer out of the metal itself and holds the colour inside that layer, which is why an anodised edge cannot chip the way a coating can and why the surface still reads as metal instead of paint. The family runs from pale champagne through to a deep, almost black bronze.

Sliding, with thermal break

For a terrace that becomes part of the cooled house: the leaves run on stainless carriages, the thermal break keeps the heat out, and the opening stays wide.

    Folding, with thermal break

The whole elevation folds into a stack at one side, so a living room opens fully onto the garden in the cooler months and closes against the heat in summer.

    Hinged, with thermal break

Hinged doors and windows for an air-conditioned majlis or pool house: easy to air on a mild evening, sealed on three contours the rest of the time. Needs room to open.

    Sliding, without thermal break

A slim profile for a terrace or pergola that is not cooled: the leaves run in tracks and take no room when open, and the space is shielded from wind, dust and sand.

    Hinged, without thermal break

For a large covered terrace or a pool enclosure that is not air-conditioned: hinged leaves close it against wind and sand and open fully on a calm day.

The honest downside

Where anodised bronze is the wrong finish

Anodising is done in a single run, and that is its weak point on any project built in stages. A door added later, a replacement leaf after damage or a gate made to match will come out of a different bath and can sit visibly apart from the original, even under the same shade name.

Damage is the other limit. A deep scratch exposes bright metal and cannot be touched up invisibly, so anodised leaves need protecting until the site is finished and careful handling afterwards. The shade family is also narrow next to coatings, and handles rarely match the frame exactly.

If the house will be finished in phases, or the door stands where knocks are likely, a brown powder coating repeats closely from its reference and touches up far more easily. Anodised bronze remains the better answer when the whole scope is ordered at once and the door faces salt air.

Frequently asked questions

Because anodising is a chemical process performed on the metal itself, and the result depends on the alloy batch, the bath and the time in it. Two identical orders anodised a month apart can land on visibly different bronzes standing side by side. A coating repeats from a code; anodising is best treated as a single run.

Anodising keeps the metallic depth and cannot chip, but it offers a limited family of shades and is unforgiving about batches. Powder coating gives you any shade you like, repeats closely from its reference and touches up more easily — at the cost of reading as a colour on metal rather than as metal.

Well, which is why it suits coastal towers. The oxide layer is part of the metal and very hard, so salt-laden air has little to get hold of. It still wants rinsing: salt left sitting on any surface eventually finds a weakness, usually at a fixing rather than in the anodising itself.

Not invisibly, and that is the honest answer. The colour sits inside the layer, so a deep scratch exposes bright metal and no touch-up pen will match it. This is why anodised sets are protected until the rest of the site work has finished, and why handling is written into the method statement.
