Gulfex Montana sliding systems

A sliding series extruded in Dubai by Gulfex (Gulf Extrusion LLC), the aluminium plant of the Al Ghurair group, and drawn around UAE conditions rather than adapted to them afterwards. The starting assumptions are the local ones: sun load on the glass, sand in the track, salt in the air along the coast and wind pressure on a balcony forty floors up. Because the profile is pressed in the same city, it reaches our workshop without a shipping leg. We fabricate it to the manufacturer's specification and fit it with our own crews.

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

Frequently asked questions

The assumptions the designer started from. A system drawn for a temperate market optimises around winter heat loss; one drawn here starts from the summer instead — a sash that sits in the sun all afternoon and has to stay straight, a track that fills with sand every shamal, coastal salt working on the finish, and wind pressure on the balcony side of a tower. That shows up in the sill drainage, the sealing arrangement and the finish options rather than in one headline figure.

A slider keeps its panels in the plane of the opening and lets the track carry the glass, which suits wide spans and high floors where a stacked leaf would catch the wind. A bi-fold clears the whole opening but parks the leaves to one side and puts more moving hardware out in the weather. On most UAE terraces the slider is the tighter, quieter answer; where the point is to make the wall disappear entirely, the bi-fold wins.

Grit in the channel is what wears rollers and turns a light panel heavy, so the sill is the part that matters. A drained channel lets sand and rainwater out instead of packing them against the carriage. After that it is upkeep rather than specification: rinsing the track out after a sandstorm and keeping the drainage slots clear does more for the life of the running gear than anything written on a data sheet.

It is a supply question, not a quality one. Aluminium is extruded to an alloy and temper wherever the press happens to stand, and a plant working for the regional market is held to that discipline like any other. What being local changes is the distance between the press and the workshop: less to go wrong in transit, no container schedule between a corrected drawing and a remade frame, and a straightforward order running three to five weeks from the approved drawing.
