Sliding panoramic doors

A panoramic door is not a larger slider — it is a wall of glass that happens to move, and the design problem moves with it from hardware to structure. The beam overhead has to stay straight under the floors it carries, the slab has to accept panes that arrive by machine rather than by hand, and the frame is deliberately buried in the ceiling, the screed and the reveals so that almost nothing is left to look at. What you specify here is the sightline: how little aluminium stands between the room and the view, and what the building has to do to allow it.

  • into the structure where the frame disappears
  • a slim interlock all you see between panes
  • hoist or glass robot how panes arrive

We produce

Curtain walls, structural and semi-structural glazing, ventilated and cassette facades. The system carries its own weight and the wind load of a tall building, and the glass line stays unbroken across the elevation.

Coordination a panoramic door needs

  • Head movement agreed with the engineer The frame carries glass, not the building
  • Floor recess and channel set out early Cut into wet trades, not finished tile
  • Pane size matched to the access route Lift, hoist or crane decided at survey
  • Sightline chosen with the architect How much metal you accept in the view
  • Glass specified against orientation Western elevations need solar control
  • Installation booked as a clear day A wall of glass goes in once

The honest downside

When a panoramic door asks too much of the building

A glass wall that moves has to be coordinated with the structure, which rules it out of many openings. The beam above is checked for movement, the track is cast into the slab and the panes arrive by hoist or crane, so in a finished apartment with a small lift the largest panes may have no way in.

The same route serves the rest of the door's life: a cracked pane goes back in the way the original came, with the same lifting equipment. A whole west elevation of glass also brings a heavy solar load, which solar-control glass reduces but does not remove.

Where the building is finished, access is tight or the opening is of ordinary width, a conventional sliding door with panes sized to the lift gives most of the view without structural work. A panoramic door remains the right choice in new builds and full renovations.

Frequently asked questions

Rarely the door system. The binding constraints are the glass plant's maximum sheet, the wind pressure at that height, which drives the thickness and therefore the mass, and — most often — how the finished unit reaches its opening. A pane that has to be craned over a parapet or walked through a lobby stops growing at the tightest corner on that route. We fix all three at survey and draw the panes to whichever answer is smallest.

An ordinary slider is a product you choose and fit into a prepared hole; a panoramic wall is a piece of the building's envelope that has to be coordinated with the structure before the wet trades finish. The tracks are cast in rather than laid on, the head is fixed to something checked for deflection, and the frames vanish into ceiling and reveals instead of framing the opening. The mechanism is a cousin of the slider — the process has almost nothing in common with it.

Yes, and it is one of the strongest reasons to go panoramic. The two glass walls meet on a slim structural joint, with the load taken by the head and the slab rather than by a mullion standing in the view. It has to be designed as a corner from the beginning — the head above it carries more, the tracks meet at a mitre, and the joint is sealed as a detail in its own right. Retrofitting a corner into an already built opening is rarely realistic.

A recess formed in the slab or screed, and a way for water to leave it. The track sits down inside that recess so the finished floor runs level through the opening, which means it is also the lowest point of the terrace at that line. We set out the recess and the drainage channel with the main contractor before tiling, because it is one of the few details on the whole project that cannot be corrected afterwards without lifting the floor.
