The honest downside
What a screen will not stop
A screen is not a guard. It is a light frame made to lift out for cleaning, and a child or a pet leaning on it can push it clean out of the opening.
It needs looking after, too. After a shamal the mesh holds a film of dust that blows into the room the next time the window is opened, so screens have to be lifted out and rinsed, and the track of a pleated screen across a sliding door collects sand like any other track. In a home kept shut and air-conditioned most of the year, some screens are hardly used.
Where the concern is a small child at an open window, a restrictor on the sash is what actually prevents a fall. Screens are the right answer for bedrooms, kitchens and majlis doors that really will be opened on the cooler nights.

It holds insects and the coarse airborne grit, and that is the honest limit. The fine dust a shamal carries is smaller than any opening you can still see through, so it passes a screen the way it passes a mesh balcony rail. Treat a screen as a ventilation fitting rather than a filter: what it reliably buys is a window you can leave open on a spring night without the garden coming in. When dust is genuinely the problem, the answer is a shut window and a well-sealed sash, not a finer mesh.
It follows the sash. An inward-opening casement takes a fixed screen frame on the outside, where it never meets the leaf. An outward-opening sash cannot do that, so the screen goes inside the room and is usually a roller or a hinged frame with the handle reaching through it. Wide sliding doors take a pleated screen that folds sideways along a track, and balcony doors often take a vertical roller. Getting this right is the whole difference between a screen you use and one you take off in the first month.
A little, and less than people expect. A dark mesh is easier to see through than a pale one, because it does not catch the light right in front of your eye — which is why charcoal or black usually works better than grey or silver. Where the view is the entire reason for the window, a marina outlook or a garden frontage, a roller screen is the usual compromise: mesh at night, nothing at all in front of the glass by day.
