Aluminium louvre blades part open over a terrace, casting bands of shade across the floor

Louvered pergolas

A louvered roof is easier to understand as a dial than as a roof that opens. The blades hang on one linkage, and the angle you leave them at settles two things in the same movement: how much sun lands on the floor, and how much of the hot air sitting under the roof can escape between the blades. Tilt them away from the sun and you keep the shade while opening that gap — which is the whole reason the roof turns rather than slides.

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

Setting out an adjustable roof

  • Sun traced across the seating area Which hours the shade has to cover
  • Blade direction fixed to that path Blades turn across the sun, not with it
  • Bay width settled before the section Span dictates how deep a blade must be
  • Perimeter laid to fall at one corner Water leaves in a chosen place
  • Bays trial-turned in our Dubai factory Full travel run before delivery
  • Closed position checked with a hose Overlap adjusted until nothing drips

The honest downside

What a louvered roof does less well

Closed flat in the middle of the day, the blades take the full sun and, being uninsulated aluminium, hand part of that heat down onto the seating below. The roof works best partly open with air moving through it; if the aim is a ceiling that stays cool to sit under at noon, blades are the wrong build.

Every moving part is also something to look after. Pivots and drainage channels collect fine sand, a wide bay turned by a handle takes real effort, and a roof left at the wrong angle when a shamal arrives catches the wind until someone turns it.

Where the space must stay dry and shaded whatever happens — a set dining table, soft furnishings, a screen — a gazebo with an insulated closed deck is the better choice. A louvered roof remains right where shade and airflow need adjusting through the day.

Frequently asked questions

It sheds water rather than seals against it. Closed, the blades overlap into one another and what lands on them runs along the section, out at the end and into the perimeter beam. That copes easily with the rain this country gets. Rain driven sideways by a squall in the cooler months can still work its way through the overlap, so if the space has to stay dry no matter what — a dining table left set, a rug, anything electrical below — the honest answer is a fixed roof or glazing, not a set of blades.

Whichever one points the open face away from where the sun is. Blades tilted towards the sun turn into strips of glare on the floor; the same opening tilted the other way keeps the shadow unbroken and still leaves a gap for the air under the roof to rise through. That is the useful setting for most of the day here, because the problem is rarely darkness and almost always heat standing still. Fully flat is for rain and for the hours when even indirect light is too much.

Because each blade is a beam carrying itself between two supports, and the further it has to reach the more it wants to bow in the middle. A shallow section over a long bay shows it: the line of the closed roof sags, the overlaps stop meeting evenly and the blades start to knock in the wind. Either the section gets deeper or an intermediate beam splits the span in two. We set the bay width first and choose the blade to suit it, never the other way round.

It collects where the movement is. Fine sand settles into the pivot ends and, more importantly, into the channels the blades drain through, and a blocked channel does not show itself until the first rain arrives and the water comes over the edge of the beam instead of down through it. Turning the blades through their full travel and rinsing the roof after a heavy shamal is most of the maintenance. A bay that has started to lag behind its neighbours is telling you the pivots need attention.
