Full-height glass partition with slim aluminium framing dividing a bright clinic reception in Dubai

Glass partitions

A screen inside a building has none of an external wall's duties. There is no weather on it, nothing to insulate against, no facade orientation to answer to. What it does have is a job in sound and a job in safety, and three junctions that decide how well it does either: the head, where a concrete slab that moves must never end up leaning on the glass; the base, where a floor that is rarely quite level has to be taken up somewhere; and the wall, where blockwork is rarely quite plumb. Add the fact that a clear pane at full height is something people walk into, and you have most of the specification.

  • no weather, no heat what it does not do
  • head, base and wall what decides it
  • marked to be seen clear glass

The honest downside

What a glass partition will not give you

A glass screen gives light, not privacy. Whatever happens behind it is on view unless something is added — a frosted band, a film or a blind — and in a bedroom, a consulting room or a home office that addition usually covers more of the pane than people planned.

It also gives up the wall. Nothing can hang on it: no shelves, no television, no pictures, and no sockets or switches along its length. Both faces collect fingerprints, which in a busy home or a clinic means wiping it far more often than a painted wall.

If a room must be private only at certain times, switchable glass can go milky at the press of a switch; if it must be private and furnished all the time, a solid wall is the honest answer. A glass partition is right where borrowed daylight matters more than wall space.

Frequently asked questions

Because the structure above it is not stationary. A concrete floor sags a little under its own weight, more when partitions and finishes are loaded onto it, and it keeps creeping slowly for a long time afterwards. A screen packed hard up to the underside stops being a partition and starts being a column, and the first thing to give is the glass. So the head channel is deeper than the pane needs, the pane is held short of it, and a gasket closes the gap while still allowing the two to move independently.

Enough to change a room, never enough to make it a vault, and the limit is usually not the glass. Speech that cannot get through a pane goes round it — over the head detail, under the base, along the joint at the wall, and through the door. A heavier pane, or two panes of different thicknesses, moves the through-path further than most people expect, and none of that helps if the ways around it are left open. When a room genuinely has to be private we deal with the perimeter first and the glazing second.

Regularly, in exactly the situations that make a screen attractive — a clean pane, good light behind it, nothing in the frame to catch the eye. The fix is something to see at standing eye height: an etched or printed band, a pattern of dots, an applied film, or a rail carried across. Where children use the space it goes lower as well, and a door set into a clear screen gets its own marked edge so the leaf and the fixed pane are told apart at a glance.

It should not stand on the tiles. Access panels are made to be lifted, and a partition bearing on them ends up unsettled every time a cable is pulled, while the void underneath carries sound freely from one side of the screen to the other. The base track is taken down to the structural slab through the floor build-up, the void is closed under the line of the screen, and the access tiles are then cut to it. The same applies wherever a floor is floating on acoustic battens.
