Glass balustrades

A glass balustrade is a barrier first and a view second, and every decision follows from that order. The glass is laminated, so a pane that cracks stays together on its interlayer and keeps standing instead of leaving an open edge at a balcony. It is held either in a base channel set into the slab and wedged plumb, or on point clamps bolted through the pane, and in both cases the fixing into the structure — usually through a waterproofing layer on a terrace or a pool deck — is the detail that decides whether the job survives its fifth summer.

The honest downside

What a glass balustrade asks of you

Glass shows everything that lands on it. On a seafront terrace or beside a pool, salt, splashes and hard water mark the panes within days, and they have to be rinsed regularly or the deposits bake in. Dust after a shamal sits along the base channel and on both faces.

It also hides nothing. A clear balustrade shows the terrace, the furniture and whoever is sitting there to the street and the neighbours below, and a cracked pane has to be made again to size rather than cut from stock.

Where upkeep, privacy or a tight budget matter more than an open view, an aluminium railing with bar or perforated infill is quieter to own. Glass is the better answer where the view is the reason for the terrace and someone is ready to keep it clean.

Frequently asked questions

Because of what happens the day it breaks. A toughened pane on its own turns into granules and falls away, and at a balcony edge that leaves exactly the gap the barrier existed to prevent. Laminated glass has an interlayer bonded between the plies: the pane can crack right through and still hold its shape in the channel until it is replaced. On anything protecting a drop, that is not an upgrade, it is the specification.

It depends on the design and on what the consultant and the authority require for that building, so it is confirmed rather than assumed. Technically a top rail does two useful things: it ties the panes into one line so they share a push, and it protects the exposed edge from knocks. Frameless with no rail is a cleaner look and puts every bit of the load into the base fixing, which is precisely why that base fixing gets the attention it does.

It will mark, and so will everything else on a seafront terrace. Salt spray and hard water leave deposits that etch in if they bake on, so the honest advice is rinsing rather than an expensive coating. The part that matters more is the metal: clamps, channels and fixings near the sea or a pool are specified for that exposure, because a bracket rusting inside a channel is a problem you cannot see coming.

It stays where it is, which is the whole reason for laminating it, and the run remains a barrier while a replacement is made. The pane is ordered from the processing drawing we hold for the job — a heat-treated pane will not take a cut or a new hole afterwards, so it has to be made to size from the start. The channel and the wedges are reused; only the glass changes.
