Gazebos

A gazebo is a small building rather than a screen. It stands away from the house on its own legs, and its roof is continuous — one deck from edge to edge instead of a set of blades — which changes everything underneath it. Beside a pool in this country that roof is asked to stop sun far more often than rain, and once it is solid the surface facing down matters as much as the surface facing up.

  • Deck laid to a fall towards the gutter Standing water stains a panel fast
  • Wiring pulled before the soffit closes Lighting and a fan planned in advance
  • Levelled, torqued and left to settle Fixings worth re-checking after some weeks

The honest downside

When a gazebo is the wrong structure

Its shade cannot be switched off. On the evenings of the cooler months, when sitting under an open sky is the point of the garden, a closed deck keeps its shadow and holds the day's warm air underneath, where a roof of blades could simply be opened.

It is also a small building in a fixed place. The footings, the drainage and the wiring settle its position once, so moving it later means starting again, and in Emaar and Dubai Holding communities (Nakheel, Meraas, Dubai Properties) a freestanding roofed structure always needs written approval (NOC) before work starts; other communities have their own rules, and we prepare the drawings for the approval.

Where the space should be sunny on some days and shaded on others, or the air should move without a fan, a louvered pergola adjusts to both. A gazebo remains the right choice where constant shade and a real roof overhead are the point, beside a pool or at the far end of a garden.

Consider instead Louvered pergolas

Frequently asked questions

The roof, and everything that follows from it. A pergola is a frame whose covering is partial or adjustable, so light and air pass through it by design. A gazebo carries a closed deck, so the shade below is constant and cannot be dialled up or down. Because that deck is solid it also catches every drop of rain and all the wind pressure, which is why a gazebo needs proper footings and its own drainage while a lighter frame often does not. It is the difference between shading a space and roofing one.

That depends on what it is standing on, and the load to design against is not the weight. A closed roof out in the open is a plate the wind gets under, and the force that matters is the one trying to lift it. On soil we dig and cast pads that give the legs something to hold down to. On an existing terrace slab we bolt through base plates once we know the slab is thick enough and what is buried in it. What we will not do is stand it on pavers and rely on its own mass.

Cooler in the sense that the sun never reaches you, warmer in the sense that the air stops moving. A closed deck removes the direct radiation completely, but it also traps the warm air that collects underneath, and there is no gap in it to let that air out. So the comfort comes from two things a blade roof does not need: an insulated build-up so the ceiling is not itself a heater, and a fan in the soffit to keep the air turning over. Open sides do the rest.

The chemistry and the water. Chlorinated splash and the damp salty air near the coast attack fixings and any exposed steel long before they touch the aluminium, so stainless fasteners and a coating specified for a marine setting are worth insisting on. Drainage gets rerouted too: the downpipe should not simply discharge onto a wet surround where people walk barefoot, and the deck should not be shedding its dust into the pool. Both are decided at the survey, while the position can still move.
