Pergola automation

The motor is the cheap, easy half. What decides whether a motorised pergola is still working in its third summer is the plumbing around it: where the supply is taken from, which route the cable takes to reach a post standing in the middle of a finished driveway, whether anyone can isolate the thing without killing the garden lighting, and how a drive sealed against water copes with dust, which behaves nothing like water.

Advantages of working with us

  • In-house production

Windows, doors and glazed structures are made at our own factory in the UAE. Manufacturing takes 3–5 weeks from the survey, and the dates are written into the contract.

  • Room measurement

After a free consultation, an engineer comes to measure within 48 hours and answers the technical questions on site — openings, profile, glass and hardware.

  • Delivery of products

We deliver with our own transport across Dubai and all Emirates, and the installation date is agreed in advance so the crew arrives with the finished units.

  • Installation on site

A "clean" installation is carried out – all construction debris is removed, and dust and dirt are cleaned. Work can be conducted with or without your presence. The date and time are discussed individually.

  • Guarantee

The structures we make and the installation our crews carry out are covered by one warranty under one contract. The profile system also carries the manufacturer's warranty — up to 20 years, depending on the system.

  • Service

Warranty cases are handled by the same crews that did the installation: send the address and photos, and in most cases we can say before the visit whether it is an adjustment, a gasket or a glass unit.

Wiring it, then keeping it running

  • Take-off point agreed with the electrician Settled before the driveway is finished
  • Conduit run to every post Cutting a laid drive is the expensive route
  • Controller housed where a hand reaches Shaded, ventilated, never sealed in
  • Isolator fitted beside the structure Work happens with the power dead
  • Scenes named the way the family speaks One button for the usual arrangement
  • Drives stripped and re-greased in season Dust wears them, not the weather

The honest downside

Does every pergola need a motor?

A small roof over a seating area, turned by someone standing under it a couple of times a day, gains little from a drive. The handle does the same job without a transformer, a controller, a cable under the paving or a drive to strip of dust and re-grease each season.

A motor on its own also decides nothing. Left open when a shamal arrives, a motorised roof stays open until someone presses a button, so a villa that is often empty needs sensors on top of the drive. And phone control lasts only as long as the software behind it; the wall switch is the part that will keep working.

For a single bay used by a household at home, a louvered roof worked by hand is the simpler buy. A drive earns its place on large or high roofs a handle cannot reach, on multi-bay structures, and where the roof moves many times a day.

Consider instead Louvered pergolas

Frequently asked questions

Sometimes, and the linkage decides. A roof built with a drive in mind has a bracket and a clear line of travel for it; one built purely for a handle often has neither, and forcing a drive onto it loads the mechanism in a direction it was never made to take. The other obstacle is dull but usually worse: getting a cable to the post. If the paving is down and the posts are solid to the ground, retrofitting means either surface trunking or lifting slabs. When a manual roof is going up now and a motor is a maybe, it is worth laying the conduit anyway.

The drives themselves run on low voltage from a transformer, which lets the cable that crosses the garden be a safe one. That transformer and the controller need mains, so they sit in a housing near the structure that is shaded and can breathe, not buried in a bench where the heat has nowhere to go. From there the cable runs in conduit beneath the paving and up inside the hollow post. The trunking clipped along a wall afterwards is the thing owners regret, and it is entirely avoidable if the route is agreed while the ground is still open.

Nothing, and that is deliberate. Handing power back to a controller that immediately replays whatever scene it was last running means a roof moving in a garden with nobody expecting it, so we configure it to wake up, take its bearings and wait to be asked. The travel limits are held in the controller, not guessed each time, so the blades are not driven against their stops to find out where they are. Anything that needed setting is set once, at commissioning.

More than the brochure implies, and for a reason particular to the UAE. The seals on a drive are made to shed water; fine sand is dry, it is carried into every gap by the wind, and once inside it acts as grinding paste on the moving surfaces. So the routine is not weatherproofing, it is cleaning: blow out the drive ends, check the travel, re-grease and turn the roof through its full range. The early warning is one bay lagging behind its neighbours as the roof closes — dealt with then, it is a service; ignored, it is a new drive.
