Double-leaf doors

A double-leaf door is one door with a reserve. There is a leaf you walk through every day and a second one bolted shut behind it, waiting for the occasions when something has to come in that the first leaf is too narrow for: a wardrobe, a fridge, a delivery pallet, somebody being carried. The pair does not have to be symmetrical either — built leaf-and-a-half, the second leaf is narrow enough to cost almost nothing in wall width and still roughly doubles the clear passage on the day it matters.

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

What decides the split between the leaves

  • The widest thing that has to pass Furniture and appliances set the width
  • Equal pair or leaf-and-a-half Facade symmetry against daily convenience
  • Mullion fixed or removable Removable needs somewhere to be stored
  • Closing order set at commissioning Leaves that meet out of turn jam
  • Frame fixings checked in the reveal A wide opening loads its jambs harder
  • Threshold continuous under both leaves The centre joint is where water gets in

The honest downside

When a second leaf is not worth having

The reserve leaf earns its place only if something wide really comes through. If the sofa arrives once and the door is used every day, you live with a leaf that stays bolted, a centre joint that is one more seal line for dust and wind, and shoot bolts that stiffen when nobody works them.

An equal pair has a further catch: each leaf is half the opening, so the one you use daily can be narrower than a good single door. The wider frame also loads its jambs harder and needs more hardware.

If the widest thing that will ever pass fits a generous single leaf, a hinged door seals on all four edges with no centre joint and less to maintain. A double-leaf door remains the right choice for service entrances and villa fronts where furniture, appliances or somebody being carried need the full width, and for symmetrical facades that call for a pair.

Consider instead Hinged doors

Frequently asked questions

No, and for most homes they should not be. An equal pair looks right on a symmetrical facade and suits a formal entrance, but it means the leaf you use daily is only half the opening — often narrower than a good single door. Leaf-and-a-half gives you a generous everyday leaf plus a slim reserve, which is why it often suits villas and townhouses. The choice is architectural first and practical second, and it is easiest to make with the elevation drawn.

By bolts at the top and bottom of the leaf that shoot into keeps in the head and the threshold, worked by a lever on the inside edge — usually hidden behind the daily leaf, so it is invisible when the door is closed and reachable in a second when it is open. There is nothing to unscrew and nothing to lift out. Because it is used rarely, it is also the part that seizes if it is never touched, so we show it at handover and suggest working it occasionally.

It appears where the pair has a post between the leaves — common on doors that need a rated lock case or a panic device on each leaf. The post carries the locking, and removing it clears the whole opening for a genuinely oversized load rather than for a sofa. It is a deliberate operation with tools and a place to put the post afterwards, not something a resident does casually. Most homes never need one; service entrances and back-of-house doors often do.

It can, but it has one joint a single door does not — the line where the two leaves meet, which is a seal between two moving parts rather than between a leaf and a fixed frame. That joint is closed by an overlapping stile with its own gasket, and the leaves are set to compress against each other rather than merely touch. It is also the first place to look if a pair whistles in a wind or lets dust through after a storm, and it adjusts.
