A balcony door is a window you walk through: it sits in a living room or a bedroom, so it is judged on daylight and on how that room feels at three in the afternoon. On the other side it takes the full weather — driven dust, the occasional downpour in the cooler months and, high on a tower, wind that keeps changing the pressure on the leaf. Getting it right comes down to the threshold and to glazing chosen for the direction the balcony faces.
Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

The honest downside
High on a tower, a balcony door works against wind and air-conditioning pressure, and each leaf action pays for it differently. A hinged leaf seals tightly but swings across a narrow balcony or into the room, and a gust can catch it. A conventional slider stays out of the way but closes onto brushes, so fine dust and a little air get past at the head and the interlock.
The threshold is the other compromise. A drained sill keeps a small upstand against driven rain, and a truly level step onto the balcony depends on how the slab and its waterproofing were built — in an existing tower it is often not on offer.
For a small, hard-cooled room on a high floor, a parallel slide door parks like a slider yet squeezes its seal on all four edges. A standard balcony door remains the sensible choice on lower floors and sheltered balconies.
