Frameless toughened glass door with stainless patch fittings and a floor spring in a contemporary Dubai office meeting room

Glass doors

A glass door has no frame around the leaf. The pane is the structure, the hardware clamps onto it, and that changes the order in which everything has to be decided. A toughened sheet cannot be drilled, cut or notched once it has been through the furnace, so the holes for the patch fittings, the lock keep and the handle are part of the glass order rather than part of the fitting. Get the sequence right and the result is a room divided without being closed off — which is what puts glass doors in offices, in studies off a majlis, and wherever a dressing area needs light it cannot borrow any other way.

  • toughened what the leaf is
  • clamped patches how it is held
  • before tempering when holes are cut

Sliding, with thermal break

For a terrace that becomes part of the cooled house: the leaves run on stainless carriages, the thermal break keeps the heat out, and the opening stays wide.

    Folding, with thermal break

The whole elevation folds into a stack at one side, so a living room opens fully onto the garden in the cooler months and closes against the heat in summer.

  • Hinged, with thermal break of a terrace

    Hinged, with thermal break

Hinged doors and windows for an air-conditioned majlis or pool house: easy to air on a mild evening, sealed on three contours the rest of the time. Needs room to open.

    Sliding, without thermal break

A slim profile for a terrace or pergola that is not cooled: the leaves run in tracks and take no room when open, and the space is shielded from wind, dust and sand.

How an interior glass door is ordered

  • Opening surveyed after the floor is laid The pane is cut to a finished dimension
  • Hardware chosen before the glass is made The fittings decide where holes go
  • Floor spring position coordinated It sits inside the screed, not on it
  • Privacy level agreed room by room Clear, satin, fluted or printed
  • Edgework and corners specified A polished edge is what hands meet
  • Delivery and handling route planned A finished leaf is carried, never trimmed

The honest downside

What a frameless glass door does not do well

Without a frame there is nothing to seal against. A frameless leaf hangs with gaps at the head, the floor and the jamb, so it takes the edge off a conversation without making a room private, and it is no match for an external opening where cooled air, dust and driven rain all need stopping.

It is also final once made. A toughened pane cannot be cut, drilled or trimmed, so a change of handle, lock or floor level after delivery means a new leaf. Clear glass also shows fingerprints at hand height.

Where privacy between rooms matters, an interior glass door in a slim aluminium frame carries a gasket line and a drop seal while keeping most of the light. A frameless door remains the right answer between an office and its corridor, or a majlis and a study, where borrowed light and a clean line matter more than sound.

Consider instead Interior glass doors

Frequently asked questions

Because toughening puts the sheet into permanent tension: the surfaces are held in compression by a core that is pulling against them, and that balance is what makes the pane strong. Cut into it, drill it or grind the edge afterwards and you release the tension at that point, which does not chip the glass — it shatters the whole sheet. So the leaf is manufactured to the survey, and the survey happens once the floor and the ceiling are finished rather than while they are still moving.

Toughened glass is required to break the way it does: instead of splitting into blades it disintegrates into small blunt granules, which is why it is the standard for doors and shower enclosures rather than ordinary annealed glass. Where a leaf has to stay in place after impact — a stair landing, an opening onto a level change — the specification moves to a laminated leaf, where an interlayer holds the broken pieces together. We ask what is on the far side of the door before choosing between them.

Less than you might hope, and it is better said in advance. A single toughened leaf hanging in a floor spring has gaps at the head, the floor and the jamb, and sound travels through gaps far more readily than through the pane. It will take the edge off a conversation; it will not make a meeting room private. Where privacy genuinely matters the honest answer is a framed door with a full set of seals and a drop closer, and we will quote that instead.

We do not recommend it in this climate. There is no thermal break in a bare pane and no continuous gasket around a frameless leaf, so an external glass door leaks conditioned air and admits dust at every edge — and the fittings that hold it are not designed to shed driven rain. Where the look is what matters, the right answer is a thermally broken frame with a minimal sightline and the largest possible glazed panel: it reads almost the same from a few paces and behaves completely differently.
