Black doors

Black suits a contemporary facade, and it is the finish that argues hardest with this climate. A dark leaf in unshaded sun absorbs nearly everything that reaches it, so the outer skin gets genuinely hot, expands more than a pale one would and passes that warmth inwards unless the profile is broken. None of that rules black out. It changes what has to sit under the coating and, very often, what goes on the inside face.

The honest downside

When black is the harder finish to live with

On an unshaded west or south elevation, a black leaf works against the sun all afternoon. It runs hotter than any lighter shade, moves more as it heats, and needs a thermal break and carefully set gaskets just to behave like a paler door.

Black also shows what the climate leaves on it. The fine beige dust that settles between cleans, drying marks after a rinse and the light scratching of blown sand all read clearly on a dark surface, even in matt, so an exposed black door asks for more cleaning than most owners expect.

For a fully exposed entrance, the grey family is the easier choice: anthracite keeps a dark look, still shows the modelling of the profile and runs a little cooler, while a mid grey hides settled dust far better. Black stays the right choice under a deep porch or in a shaded reveal, ideally with a lighter room side.

Frequently asked questions

The outer face of an unshaded black leaf does become uncomfortable in the afternoon; that is physics rather than a defect. What your hand actually meets is the handle and the inner face, and a thermal break keeps both near room temperature. A porch or a deep reveal removes the question altogether.

Not a well-made one, but it does move it. Aluminium expands as it warms and a dark leaf warms more, so tolerances and gasket compression are set with that in mind. Doors set to a tight gap in the cool of the morning are the ones that bind at four in the afternoon.

Matt, in very nearly every case here. Gloss black is a magnet for dust film, fingerprints and the fine scratching blown sand leaves behind, and each of those shows as a bright mark on a shiny dark surface. A matt or finely textured finish diffuses the lot.

Yes. A profile can be coated in two shades, so the facade keeps its black while the hallway gets warm grey, white or a wood effect. It is a factory operation and costs a little more than a single shade — usually worth it in rooms where black feels heavy.
