Bespoke aluminium glazing on a contemporary Dubai villa combining a curved-head field with angled and rectangular fields in one frame system

Custom shapes

Not every opening is a rectangle, and a shape that works on an architect's elevation still has to become a frame somebody can bend, glaze, carry and set. Our route through that has three steps: the built opening is templated rather than measured, the outline is redrawn against what the chosen profile will actually bend to, and any part that has to open is kept as a straight-sided field inside the composition so ordinary hardware can be used. What we push back on is a curve tighter than the section will take without distorting, or a point so acute that no seal survives it — both are far cheaper to solve on paper than to discover in the works.

  • templated, not measured the survey
  • the bending radius first constraint
  • kept straight-sided the opening field

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

The honest downside

What a one-off shape asks of you

Most of a one-off outline is glass that does not open. Hardware needs straight sides, so the vent sits in a rectangular field and the curves and points around it stay fixed — the room gets less air than the size of the glazing suggests. Blinds and curtain tracks do not follow the shape either, so the odd parts stay bare to the sun or need made-to-measure shading.

Every piece is a one-off, too: the template, the bent profile and the shaped glass all cost more than their rectangular equivalents, and a cracked shaped pane is remade to the template, not taken from stock.

If the building does not already demand the shape, a rectangular window with its character in the division — glazing bars, an offset mullion — is simpler to shade, ventilate and maintain. A custom shape stays the right answer where the opening is already built that way or the elevation genuinely depends on it.

Frequently asked questions

We do not, in the usual sense — we copy it. A template in card or thin ply is offered up to the built opening and cut back until it sits in the reveal without daylight round it, and that template, not a list of dimensions, is what the workshop works from. Anything with a curve or an odd angle in it defeats a tape, because two people measuring the same arc will write down two different things.

There are shapes we redraw rather than refuse. A radius tighter than the profile tolerates will distort the section on the inside of the curve and the sightline will ripple; an angle sharpened past a certain point leaves too little metal for a joint and too little room for a gasket to turn. We say so at the drawing stage and propose the nearest outline that will still be sound in a decade, rather than making something that photographs well and fails quietly.

The workshop time is what it is for any window of ours — three to five weeks from an approved drawing. What genuinely adds time sits before that: taking the template, settling the outline, and getting the shaped glass confirmed, because a curved or angular pane cannot be recut once it has been through the toughening furnace. We front-load that work deliberately so the production stage stays predictable.

Yes, and it usually works best that way. The odd shape and the ordinary rectangles come out of the same profile system, take the same powder-coated colour and share the same glass specification, so the facade reads as one set of windows with one feature in it rather than as a collection of separate purchases. It also means the whole elevation is surveyed, made and fitted as a single job.
