Corner glazing in a Dubai apartment where two planes of aluminium-framed glass meet at the building corner above the marina

Corner windows

A corner window turns the meeting of two walls into glass, so a room reads outward in two directions instead of stopping at a solid return. Almost everything about the type is decided in that one joint: either a slim aluminium corner post, which is straightforward and unambiguously structural, or a glass-to-glass butt bonded with structural silicone, which nearly disappears and asks a great deal more of the survey and the fabrication. A corner is also where the wind pressure around a building peaks, so the calculation for a corner unit is never the one used for the same window in the middle of the same facade.

  • post or bonded how the corner is made
  • highest on the facade wind pressure
  • away from the joint where the sash goes

We produce

Curtain walls, structural and semi-structural glazing, ventilated and cassette facades. The system carries its own weight and the wind load of a tall building, and the glass line stays unbroken across the elevation.

How a corner opening is prepared

  • Both reveals measured and checked square A corner shows every fraction out of true
  • Wind case taken for the corner itself Not the figure used mid-facade
  • Corner detail chosen and drawn Slim post or bonded glass joint
  • Slab edge and floor level checked Head and sill have to meet in the angle
  • Made and glazed in our Dubai factory Three to five weeks from the approved drawing
  • Lifted, set and the joint sealed last Both planes trued before bonding

The honest downside

What a corner window takes from the room

Glazing the corner takes away the two walls a room usually leans on. A wardrobe, a bed head or a desk has to go elsewhere, and in a small bedroom that matters more than the view. The room is also seen from two directions, which on a low floor or across a narrow gap between towers means blinds that stay half-closed.

Two glass faces mean two lots of sun: on a south-west corner one plane takes the midday light and the other the late afternoon, and the air conditioning feels both. A bonded corner adds a catch of its own — a cracked pane there means re-bonding the joint on site.

If the aim is more light and a wider outlook, a full-height window across one wall gives most of it and leaves the corner solid. A corner window stays the right answer where there is a real view on both sides and the room can spare those two walls.

Consider instead Floor-to-ceiling windows

Frequently asked questions

It is when it is engineered as one. A bonded corner carries its load through a structural silicone joint rather than through metal, which means the joint width, the glass edge preparation and the curing conditions all become part of the structure — there is no forgiving tolerance in it. A slim post does the same job with an ordinary mechanical connection and a fraction of the fuss. We quote both and say plainly which one the opening in front of us is suited to.

Because air does not stop at the building, it accelerates around it. As the flow separates at the edge it pulls away from the surface, and that suction on the corner panes is stronger than the pressure the middle of the facade sees in the same gust. It is a well-established effect in facade engineering, which is why our calculation treats a corner unit as its own case rather than copying the schedule from the rest of the elevation.

Yes, but not at the corner. A leaf hung on the pane that meets the joint has nowhere to swing and no stile to lock into, so the opening field is placed at the far end of one plane where the frame is ordinary and the hardware is standard. In a tower flat that usually means a tall tilt-and-turn leaf beside the corner, giving the room its air without breaking the two-way view.

Inside the existing opening, usually. Replacing like for like in the same reveal is a flat-level job; changing the shape of the glazing is not, because the elevation is part of the building and the owners' association holds the approved design for it. We survey first and tell you which of the two we are looking at before anything is priced or drawn.
