Glazed entrance canopy in Dubai on slim stainless arms with tie rods to the wall above

Glass canopies

A canopy is a roof people stand under and look through, so two rules run the whole design. The glass is laminated, because anything overhead has to stay in one piece if it ever breaks; and the sheet is laid to a fall, because dust that ponds in a puddle bakes onto the pane and the heavy shower the cooler months deliver has to go somewhere deliberate. Support comes either from a cantilever out of the wall or from arms hung on tie rods above. On an exposed entrance the load that sizes them is not the weight of the glass — it is the suction that lifts the leading edge in a gust.

  • laid to a fall how it drains

Aluminium glazing for villas, terraces, pergolas and pool houses

Sliding, with thermal break

For a terrace that becomes part of the cooled house: the leaves run on stainless carriages, the thermal break keeps the heat out, and the opening stays wide.

  • Folding, with thermal break of a terrace

    Folding, with thermal break

The whole elevation folds into a stack at one side, so a living room opens fully onto the garden in the cooler months and closes against the heat in summer.

  • Hinged, with thermal break of a terrace

    Hinged, with thermal break

Hinged doors and windows for an air-conditioned majlis or pool house: easy to air on a mild evening, sealed on three contours the rest of the time. Needs room to open.

  • Sliding, without thermal break of a terrace

    Sliding, without thermal break

A slim profile for a terrace or pergola that is not cooled: the leaves run in tracks and take no room when open, and the space is shielded from wind, dust and sand.

  • Hinged, without thermal break of a terrace

    Hinged, without thermal break

For a large covered terrace or a pool enclosure that is not air-conditioned: hinged leaves close it against wind and sand and open fully on a calm day.

How a canopy is worked out

  • Entrance surveyed and the wall build-up checked Survey inside 48 hours of your call
  • Support chosen against what is behind the wall A cantilever needs something to hold it
  • Fall set out first, then the gutter and outlet Water gets a destination, not a slope
  • Glass processed with the fixings already drawn Cut-outs are made before heat treatment
  • Arms set, sheets laid, clamps and joints closed Lines held across the whole run
  • Cleaning access agreed as part of handover A flat canopy shows every mark

The honest downside

Where a glass canopy is the wrong choice

A glass canopy keeps dust and the occasional heavy shower off, but it does not make shade. The sun comes straight through, so the space beneath gets little relief at midday and a car parked under it gains almost nothing.

It is also a surface everybody looks up at. Dust, sand and air-conditioning drips show from below between washes, and cleaning a sheet over an entrance needs access that has to be planned rather than improvised.

If the aim is shade — over a car, a seating area or a door that faces the afternoon sun — a solid or louvered roof does that job far better. A glass canopy is right where the entrance must stay bright, the facade behind it must stay visible and the job is to keep people dry and dust off the door.

Consider instead Louvered pergolas

Frequently asked questions

Because of where it is. Anything glazed overhead is above people's heads by definition, so the requirement is that a broken pane does not come down: laminated glass cracks and stays hanging on its interlayer, held by its clamps, until somebody replaces it. A single toughened sheet in the same position would empty itself onto the entrance. Overhead is one of the few places where the glass specification really is not negotiable.

Yes, and rain is the smaller half of the reason. Dust settles constantly, condensate drips off the air-conditioning above, and whatever is used to wash the facade runs down onto it — all of which puddles on a dead-flat sheet, dries in the sun and leaves a stain that becomes very hard to shift. A fall keeps the surface moving water and dirt to one edge, where the gutter can take it away.

It depends on what is behind the wall, not on taste. A cantilever puts a twisting force into the structure at one line and needs something solid there to resist it; where there is only blockwork, that force has nowhere to go. Tie rods carry the load up to a higher fixing instead and let the arms be much slimmer, at the price of visible rods across the elevation. We look at the structure first and show both.

The fixings, working the wrong way round from what people expect. Wind flowing over a projecting roof drops the pressure above it and pulls, so the loading case that matters is upward, at the leading edge, and it is why an entrance canopy has more steel and more bolts in it than its weight would ever suggest. Anything designed only to hold the glass up is at real risk in a strong shamal.
