Laminated security glass

Two plies of glass bonded to a tough transparent interlayer behave as one sheet. Break it and the pane crazes but stays where it was — held to the interlayer instead of leaving the opening as loose pieces. That behaviour is the whole argument for it wherever a person can walk into the glass or fall against it: panes running to the floor, balcony balustrades, pool enclosures and full-glass doors. The same interlayer absorbs most of the ultraviolet as well, so what sits behind it keeps its colour a good deal longer.

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

The honest downside

Where laminated glass is not enough on its own

Laminated glass is often bought against break-ins, and on its own it rarely delivers that. An intruder seldom attacks the middle of a pane: a sash is levered at the hinge side, a lock is forced, a sliding leaf is lifted off its track. If the frame and the hardware give way first, the glass holding together makes no difference.

Where nobody can reach the glass and no fragment has anywhere to fall, it is a heavier and dearer build than the opening needs. And by a pool or the sea, a frameless panel whose laminated edge stays bare and wet needs the right interlayer and a sealed edge, or that edge can cloud.

When the worry is someone getting in, look at a security window, where frame, locking and glass resist together. Laminated glass stays the right answer wherever a person can fall against the glass or a broken pane must not leave the frame.

Frequently asked questions

They solve opposite halves of the same problem. Toughened glass is heat-treated so that when it does fail it collapses into blunt granules instead of long shards — but it collapses out of the opening. Laminated glass is bonded to an interlayer, so a broken pane hangs on in the frame and can be walked past until it is changed. Where there is height or a fall involved you want the pane to stay put, which is why the two are usually combined: toughened plies, laminated into a single panel.

It buys time; it does not promise immunity. Laminated glass can be cracked, but cracking it is not the same as getting through it — the interlayer holds, and an opening has to be cut or beaten out of the panel, which is slow and extremely loud. That is the honest claim to make for it: a delay long enough to be noticed and abandoned, rather than a window nobody can breach.

Anywhere a body can reach the glass. Panes that run to the floor, balustrades of every kind, doors and their side panels, wet rooms, and anything glazed overhead. On towers it applies for a second reason as well: a fragment leaving a facade at height is a different order of risk from one dropping onto a villa terrace. We raise these at the survey rather than leaving them sitting in the quote as an upgrade line.

It will hold the colours longer. The interlayer absorbs most of the ultraviolet, and ultraviolet is the part of sunlight that bleaches fabric, timber and artwork. What it does not do is stop the heat — that is the solar-control coating's job — so in a west-facing majlis or a room full of joinery we normally specify the two together in one unit and let each part do what it is good at.
