Triple glazed units

Three panes, two sealed cavities, and a question worth asking out loud: what is the third pane for? It works on the temperature difference across the glass, which is the problem a northern winter sets and not the one a UAE summer sets. Here the heat arrives as sunlight striking the pane, and sunlight is turned back by what is on the glass rather than by another chamber of still air. So we do build triple units — for rooms held far below the outside air, and for glazing you sit right against — and we say plainly when a better coating on a double unit is the smarter buy.

  • three panes two sealed cavities
  • heavier sash what it costs you
  • cold rooms where it earns its place

We produce

Curtain walls, structural and semi-structural glazing, ventilated and cassette facades. The system carries its own weight and the wind load of a tall building, and the glass line stays unbroken across the elevation.

The honest downside

Where a third pane works against you

The weight is felt every day. On a large sliding leaf, a triple unit makes the sash harder to start and stop and puts more load on the rollers and the track, where sand already does its damage. On a big side-hung sash, the same weight pulls at the hinges every time it swings.

Each extra pane also takes a little daylight and adds a reflection, so the view is slightly dimmer and, with ordinary float glass, a shade greener than through a double unit. And existing frames rarely take the thicker build-up, so it usually means new windows rather than new glass.

For a living room, a bedroom or a majlis, a double unit with a good coating is lighter, brighter and usually cooler for the same money. A triple unit still makes sense in rooms held far below the outside air all day, such as a home cinema or a wine store.

Consider instead Double glazed units

Frequently asked questions

Not automatically, and on most elevations not at all. A third pane works on the temperature difference across the assembly — it is the answer to a winter that presses cold against the glass. What presses on a window here is sunlight, and sunlight is dealt with by the coating on the pane. Put the same money into a better coated double unit and the room is usually cooler and the sash is lighter. We would rather say that before quoting than have you discover it after the windows are in.

In rooms held a long way below the outside air, and held there all day: a home cinema, a wine store, a gym kept cold, a technical room full of equipment. The larger and the steadier that difference, the more the second cavity is doing. The other reason is comfort rather than energy — a big pane you sit right against has a warm inner face in a Dubai summer, and a triple build brings that face closer to room temperature, so leaning on the glass stops feeling like leaning on a sun-baked wall.

Not by itself, and often less than people expect. Quiet comes from panes that refuse to resonate together, so three sheets of the same thickness can hand sound along as readily as two. An asymmetric double — unequal thicknesses with a laminated interlayer on one of them — regularly outperforms a symmetrical triple. If noise is the reason you are asking about a third pane, that is the build-up to look at instead.

Weight and depth. The unit is heavier, so the hinges, the sash and the fixings all have to be sized for it; and it is thicker, so not every profile will take it — the glazing rebate has a limit and the frame has to be deep enough to hold the build. Those two facts can settle the question on the survey itself. Where the system takes it and the room justifies it we build it; where it will not, we say so rather than making a sash carry something it was never drawn for.
