Pool view glazing

Glass with a pool on the far side of it behaves in a way that catches people out. A pool evaporates all day and all night, so the air directly above the water is the most humid air on the plot; the pane standing in front of a hard-working air conditioner is the coldest surface that air will meet; and on a still morning the mist therefore forms on the outside face — in front of the view, on the side nobody can reach from the sofa. The rest of the elevation follows the same pattern, in that the trouble sits just outside the room. Splashed and hosed pool water dries on hardware and leaves what was dissolved in it behind, and the deck in front of the glass is the one surface in a house that people cross wet and barefoot.

What a pool-facing pane has to deal with

  • Outside, at dawn

    Condensation

Humid air meeting a chilled outer pane

  • Aimed off the glass

    Cooling supply

It decides how long the fog lasts

  • Marine specification

    Hardware

    Splash dries and concentrates

  • Laminated

    Glass at deck level

Wet feet, bare feet, running children

  • Open and rinsable

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

How a pool elevation is worked out

  • Deck, water line and cooling layout looked at together Survey arranged within 48 hours
  • Air-conditioning outlets kept off the glass line Agreed with whoever designs the cooling
  • Unit chosen for how cold its outer pane will run That is what governs the morning mist
  • Hardware written up as it would be on the coast Chlorides arrive dissolved and stay behind
  • Frames and units made in our Dubai factory Three to five weeks from the signed drawing
  • Threshold and track left open for a hose Nothing sealed that has to be rinsed

The honest downside

Before you put a glass wall in front of the pool

A wide glazed opening onto the pool deck removes the one barrier between the house and the water. For a family with small children, a sliding wall that anyone can open means the pool is a few steps from the living room with nothing in between, and the glass itself does nothing about that.

The glass also asks for regular attention: pool water and hose spray dry on the outer face and the hardware, and the morning mist sits on the side nobody can reach from indoors.

If children use the house, a fence around the pool with a self-closing gate belongs in the plan alongside the glazing, not after it. Pool-facing glass stays the right choice where the view of the water is the reason for the room and the deck is designed with it.

Consider instead Pool fencing

Frequently asked questions

Because that face is colder than the air touching it. The room behind is being cooled hard, a good glazing unit lets very little of that reach the outer pane — and on a still, humid morning very little is enough. The air right above a pool is the most humid on the plot, since the water has been evaporating into it all night, so the vapour condenses on the outer face and clears once the sun gets onto it. Strictly, it is a sign the glazing is working, which is no comfort when it is between you and the water. What shortens it is air movement across that face, some early sun on it, and cooling that is not aimed straight down the inside of the glass.

Not the swimming water so much as what it leaves behind. Splash and hose water dry on a handle, a hinge or a track and the dissolved chlorides stay there, so every drying cycle leaves that metal sitting in something more aggressive than the pool ever was. The specification we write is therefore the one we would write for a seafront: properly pre-treated and coated frames, moving parts in a marine grade of stainless, no dissimilar metals left touching where salts can bridge them, and a rinse with fresh water treated as part of cleaning the deck rather than as a favour to the windows.

Laminated, for a reason that belongs to pools rather than to glazing in general. The deck is the one place in a house where people are wet, barefoot and moving fast, and a pane that fails there fails over a surface nobody is wearing shoes on; a laminated build-up holds together on its interlayer instead of coming down in pieces. The second point on a pool elevation is that a big clear pane with water and sky reflected in it reads as an opening, so something at eye level — a band, a frit, a transom you can actually see — stops being decoration and starts being useful.

Ask it before the pool is dug, because water is a mirror. A pool laid directly in front of a west-facing run throws the low afternoon sun back into the room, and no glass specification makes that comfortable; the same pool set to one side is a pleasure all day. After dark the effect reverses, and the lit water reflects in a pane that has become a mirror from inside. Where the pool is already there, the answers are shade over the deck, a run of glass stepped back under an overhang, or planting between the two — all of them cheaper and better than trying to solve it with a coating.
