Grey doors

Grey is a common, quiet choice on new buildings across the Emirates, and anthracite in particular is a shade many cladding panels, railings and window frames already wear. It carries a practical advantage the debate usually misses: the fine beige dust that settles between cleans barely registers on a mid grey, while it draws itself all over white and black alike. The difficulty is that greys shift under UAE light more than most colours do.

The honest downside

Where a grey finish can let you down

Grey shifts more than most colours under UAE light. A reference that looks neutral on the sample can lean blue at noon and beige at dusk, and a cool grey can fight warm stone or travertine beside it. Matching existing cladding needs a physical offcut; a code alone lands close, not exact.

The darker end has a second cost. Anthracite runs cooler than black, but on an unshaded west elevation it still absorbs far more sun than a pale finish, and smooth greys show the marks a handled entrance leaf collects.

For a leaf standing in full afternoon sun, white reflects most of that heat and runs closest to air temperature, at the price of showing dust sooner. Grey remains the sensible choice where the door has to sit with anthracite frames, railings or cladding already on the building, and where settled dust between cleans is the bigger nuisance.

Frequently asked questions

Because a small chip is judged against your hand and a facade is judged against sky, stone and shadow. UAE daylight is bright and slightly warm, which pushes cool greys towards blue and warm greys towards beige, and one reference will read two ways between noon and dusk. That is why samples go on the wall rather than across a desk.

No, and outdoors the difference is obvious even though the two look identical in a showroom. Anthracite is a very dark grey that still shows shadow and modelling along a profile, whereas true black flattens into a silhouette. Anthracite also runs a little cooler in the sun.

It helps twice over. The fine texture scatters reflected light instead of throwing a hard highlight down the profile, and it disguises the small marks a handled entrance leaf collects. It is also more forgiving of the odd knock during installation.

It can be brought very close, but only by coating against a physical sample rather than a shared code. Cladding panels and window profiles are coated on different lines and sometimes by different processes, so we ask for an offcut and colour to that.
