Majlis in a UAE villa with tall aluminium-framed windows, patterned screening and soft daylight

Majlis glazing

The majlis is the room a household opens to its guests, and it is judged from two sides at once — how it reads from the street and how it feels from within. Glazing has to bring in generous daylight without putting the gathering on view, and hold a steady temperature while the door opens and closes through the evening. We work with the family and the interior designer on where the glass sits, how it is screened and how quietly everything closes.

We produce

Curtain walls, structural and semi-structural glazing, ventilated and cassette facades. The system carries its own weight and the wind load of a tall building, and the glass line stays unbroken across the elevation.

The honest downside

Where majlis glazing needs help

Reflective and tinted glass keep the room private only while it is brighter outside than in. After sunset, with the majlis lit and full of guests, the effect reverses and the gathering is on view from the street — at exactly the hours the room is used most.

So a glazed majlis still needs something that closes at night: curtains, a screen or a blind. Curtains across large panes collect dust after every shamal, and a mashrabiya in front of the glass has to be designed with the elevation, not added later.

Where evening privacy matters and fabric is not wanted, blinds sealed inside the glazing unit close off the view without gathering dust. Reflective glass alone is enough where the majlis is used mainly by day or faces a courtyard rather than the street.

Frequently asked questions

Privacy and darkness are separate problems. A reflective or lightly tinted outer pane reads very differently from the two sides — bright outside, quiet inside — so the room keeps its daylight while the view in is broken. Screening set in front of the glass, or simply setting the window back into a deep reveal, does the same job architecturally and cuts the direct sun as a bonus.

Yes, and it is worth doing. Where the majlis has its own door from the courtyard or the street, the entrance screen is built from the same profile family and the same finish, so the composition reads as one piece rather than as a room with a door added to it.

It does, in both directions. A laminated pane with an acoustic interlayer, a full set of sealing contours and a door that closes onto its seals keep conversation in the majlis and keep the street, the generator and the neighbour's gate out of it. Sealing matters as much as the glass — one poorly closing leaf undoes the rest.

Often the most satisfying result. A mashrabiya-style aluminium screen, powder-coated to the tone of the joinery, sits in front of large plain panes — fixed, or sliding so it can be moved through the day. The pattern is drawn with the interior designer and cut in our own workshop.
