Garden room at a villa
Thermal-break frames and solar-control glass
Ribbon glazing runs the window sideways instead of punching holes in a wall. One horizontal band of glass crosses the elevation, interrupted only by slim posts, with solid panel above and below, so the building reads as stripes rather than as openings. Daylight arrives at eye level all the way along a room, which is why the band suits long living spaces, majlis wings and open floors better than a row of separate windows ever does. Its own problem is length: a run that long stretches and shortens with the sun, so it is divided into bays that can move without shoving each other.

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

The honest downside
A band at eye level lights a strip of the room close to the wall. With solid panel above it, daylight does not reach as deep as it would from taller openings, so in a deep plan the back of the room can stay dim through the day.
It also exposes a room along its whole length. A continuous band facing a street or a neighbour puts every part of the room on view at once, and a single long blind or curtain is the usual answer. In an existing building a ribbon is a structural change, since the load above has to cross the whole run.
Where the room is deep or needs privacy, full-height windows placed where they are needed bring light further in and leave wall between them. A ribbon stays the right choice for long rooms whose view runs along the elevation and whose design starts with the band.
