Colours and finishes

The coating is the only part of an aluminium window that meets the sun, the salt and the shamal every day of its life. Three routes are open: powder coating across the RAL range, anodising in bronze or champagne, and a wood-effect finish that keeps the grain without the upkeep. Which one is right has far more to do with how exposed the elevation is than with the shade you liked on a chart. Frame and sash go through the coating line together in our Dubai factory, so the colour matches across the whole opening.

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

How a finish is chosen and applied

  • Elevation and exposure assessed on site Engineer with you within 48 hours
  • Finish route agreed before the drawing is signed Powder coat, anodising or wood effect
  • Sprayed sample seen on the building in daylight A printed chart is not a colour match
  • A shade we do not hold booked as its own run Allowed for in the quoted dates
  • Frame and sash coated in one pass In our own Dubai factory

The honest downside

Where your finish choice can cost you

Dark colours pay a price in this sun. An anthracite or black frame on a west or south elevation gets noticeably hotter than a light one, is unpleasant to touch in the afternoon, and moves more with the daily heat, which the joints and seals have to absorb. Dark and matt finishes also show the fine dust after a shamal, and the salt film near the coast, sooner than light ones.

A special shade has costs of its own: it is booked as a separate coating run, and a window added later may not match the first batch exactly. Textured and metallic finishes are also harder to touch up invisibly after a knock.

On an exposed elevation, a light shade is the easier life. A dark or bespoke colour is still the right choice where the architecture calls for it and the owner accepts a little more upkeep.

Frequently asked questions

Anodising, in most coastal cases. A powder coat is a paint film sitting on the metal, and on a western elevation within sight of the water it chalks and loses depth of colour before an inland one does. Anodising is an oxide layer grown into the aluminium itself, so there is no film that can lift. The trade-off is choice: anodising gives you metallic tones, powder coating gives you the whole RAL range and any matt or textured variant of it.

On most of our systems, yes. In a thermally broken profile the outer and inner shells are separate pieces of aluminium joined by the polyamide bar, so they can go through the line in different colours. Anthracite outside to sit with the facade and off-white inside to disappear into the wall is one such pairing. It has to be settled before the profiles are coated — it is not a change that can be made once they are cut and glazed.

It behaves like aluminium, which is the whole point of it. The grain is a decorative layer bonded to the profile; underneath sits the same metal with the same thermal break, so nothing warps, splits or wants oiling after a summer of direct sun. Use it where the architecture asks for timber — majlis screens, courtyard frames, villa shutters — without taking on the maintenance real timber would need in this climate.

A powder-coated profile can be touched up locally, and in principle stripped and recoated, though a full recoat is a workshop job rather than something done on a fitted window. Anodising cannot be touched up at all: damage to the oxide layer means replacing the piece. That difference is worth weighing at the drawing stage for ground-floor and terrace frames, which are the ones that collect knocks from furniture and cleaning equipment.
