Tall aluminium glazed door in a Dubai villa with venetian blind slats sealed inside the double glazed unit, garden beyond
  • DUST AND SANDSTORMS
  • SEALED IN THE CAVITY

Integrated blinds

The blind is not in the room. It is inside the sealed unit, between the panes, with glass on both sides of it. A slim venetian or pleated blind is built into the cavity as the unit is assembled and worked from the frame — usually straight through the glass by a magnetic slider, sometimes by a low-voltage motor sealed in with it. In a country where one shamal coats every horizontal surface in the house, that is the argument: slats nobody ever dusts, nothing hanging to rattle in an air-conditioning draught, no cords within a child's reach. The trade is that the blind and the unit are now one object, and one object is what gets replaced if the mechanism fails.

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

The honest downside

What integrated blinds do not do well

They do not make a room dark. The slats sit in the cavity with a small clearance along each edge of the glass, so a bedroom or a home cinema still gets a line of light around the blind. If complete darkness is the aim, this is the wrong product.

The choice is also fixed on the day the unit is sealed. The slat colour and type cannot be changed when the room is redecorated, and a very wide or very tall pane may be beyond what a blind in a cavity can run smoothly, so the largest glass walls often go without one.

For a bedroom that must go dark, or a floor-to-ceiling glass wall, a blackout blind or curtain on the room side is the practical answer. Integrated blinds remain the right choice for glazed doors, bathrooms, kitchens and dusty elevations, where a hanging blind would swing, stain or need constant cleaning.

Frequently asked questions

They help, and they are not the heat solution. A blind inside the cavity is better placed than one hanging in the room: what it absorbs sits on the far side of the inner pane, so less of that warmth ends up in the air you are sitting in. But the sunlight has already crossed the outer pane to reach it, and the honest order of things on a Dubai elevation is coating first, blind second. We specify the glass build for the heat and the integrated blind for light, privacy and glare — not the other way round.

The unit is replaced. There is no opening a sealed unit to reach a mechanism inside it — the edge seal is what keeps the cavity dry, and breaking it ends the unit. That is the real cost of the idea, and we put it in front of clients before they order: you are buying a blind expected to last as long as the glass around it, from a manufacturer whose parts and warranty are worth reading properly. Because the units are assembled in our own Dubai factory, a replacement is remade to the same sizes without waiting on an import.

Not into the units you have — the blind goes in during assembly, before the edge is sealed. What can be done is replacing the glazing: if the frame is sound and deep enough to take a thicker unit, and the sash and hinges will carry the extra weight, new units with blinds inside can be glazed into your existing windows. Whether that works is a survey question about the profile you own, and it is a quick one to answer on site.

In specific places, clearly. Glazed doors that get opened all day, where a room-side blind swings and rattles. Bathrooms and kitchens, where fabric collects steam and grease. Any villa where dust after a sandstorm means taking every blind down to clean it. And homes with small children, where a hanging cord is a hazard nobody wants. Where an ordinary blind sits quietly in a bedroom and can be cleaned in five minutes, it is hard to argue for sealing one inside a glass unit.
