Bolted spider glazing wall in a Dubai hotel atrium with stainless corner fittings and glass fins behind

Spider glazing

Spider glazing holds each pane at its corners and nowhere else. Stainless arms — the spiders — reach out from a backing structure of glass fins, steel tubes or tension rods and pass through holes drilled in the pane, so nothing crosses the face of the wall except a silicone line between one sheet and the next. It is the system for atria, hotel lobbies and double-height entrance halls, where the point is to look through the wall rather than at it. All the discipline sits in the fittings: every bolt swivels, so that when the glass or the structure behind it moves, the hole is not levered.

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

How a bolted glass wall is built

  • Opening measured and the pane grid set out Survey inside 48 hours of the enquiry
  • Backing structure designed around its own movement The glass follows whatever it hangs on
  • Hole positions fixed on the processing drawing Nothing is drilled at site
  • Edges worked and holes made, then the furnace Processing comes before toughening
  • Spiders set, panes hung, joint widths held Aligned across the whole wall
  • Joints gunned and the wall washed down Cleaning route agreed at the same time

Partitions

Office partitions made of aluminium profiles are a simple, quick, and cost-effective way to organise efficient zoning within a large space, while maintaining interior unity.

The honest downside

What point-fixed glass asks of a building

Taking the frame away puts the work behind the glass. Fins, tubes or rods have to carry the wind that a frame would have taken, so the cost moves into steelwork and engineering rather than disappearing, and every pane is drilled to a drawing that cannot be changed after toughening.

A wall of glass held at the corners also gives the sun a clear run into the lobby, with no frame for a blind or a screen to fix to, and it shows every mark along its silicone joints between cleans.

For an office front or a lobby that faces the afternoon sun and has to be cooled economically, a framed curtain wall with insulated units is easier to shade, seal and maintain. Spider glazing is worth it where the view through the wall is the whole point of the space.

Frequently asked questions

Because a frame is the thing you are trying to remove. Point fixing pulls the support back to four small nodes and hangs everything else — the stiffness, the wind resistance — on a structure set behind the glass, where it can be a slim fin or a rod rather than a grid across the view. In an atrium that is the whole reason for the wall: from inside you read the courtyard, not the mullions.

The load path runs backwards, not sideways. Wind on a pane goes into the four bolts, from the bolts into the spider arms, from the spiders into the fin, tube or rod behind, and only then into the building at the head and the base. That is why the backing structure is designed first and the glass second, and why how far it is allowed to deflect is settled before any pane is ordered.

No. A pane that has been through the toughening furnace will not take a drill or a saw afterwards — the processing all happens while the glass is still annealed, and the heat treatment is the last step. In practice this is a filing question: the processing drawing is kept with the job record, and a replacement is ordered from it rather than measured off the gap.

It has to be designed with an answer already. Depending on the space that means a maintenance walkway above, a cradle from the roof, or simply reach from the atrium floor with a pole system, and each of those changes what the structure carries. Frameless glass also shows every mark, and dust settles along the silicone joints first, so the cleaning interval is part of the conversation rather than an afterthought.
