Flush structurally glazed showroom facade in Dubai with dark glass and thin silicone joints between panes
  • SHOWROOMS AND LOBBIES
  • NO OUTER FRAME

Structural glazing

Structural glazing takes the aluminium off the outside face of the building. Each pane is bonded to a carrier frame along its edge with a structural silicone joint, and that joint — not a pressure plate screwed over the glass — is what hands wind pressure and suction back to the frame. From the street the elevation reads as glass and shadow lines, which is why it ends up on showrooms, corporate lobbies and penthouse elevations rather than on a warehouse. It also means the bond is made indoors on a bench: dust and damp on a bonding face are the two things silicone will not forgive.

  • silicone bond what holds the pane
  • bonded indoors where it is made

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

How a bonded elevation is put together

  • Elevation measured and the pane grid drawn Our engineer on site within 48 hours
  • Carrier frames machined one per pane Made in our Dubai workshop
  • Bonding faces cleaned, primed and joined On the bench, away from site dust
  • Units left to cure before they are moved Nothing travels green
  • Anchors set, units hung and lined through Shadow gap held right across
  • Weather joints gunned, tooled and washed Then walked and checked pane by pane

Examples of solutions

  • Sliding panoramic glazing opening onto a terrace with a view of Burj Al Arab
  • Dubai villa with dark aluminium windows and panoramic glazing

The honest downside

The trade-offs of structural glazing

A bonded pane does not come out on its own. If one cracks, the glass and its carrier frame are removed together and a replacement pair is made and cured in the workshop, so a single broken pane means an access platform and a wait measured in weeks.

The flush face also shows everything. With no caps to break it up, streaks from dust and the first rain run across whole panes, and the weather joints between them keep the water out on their own — they have to be inspected and remade over the life of the building.

Where the look matters but easy maintenance matters too, semi-structural glazing keeps a capped edge on one axis, so a unit can be released with tools from outside. Fully bonded glazing is the right choice for a showroom or lobby where an unbroken glass face is the whole brief.

Consider instead Semi-structural glazing

Frequently asked questions

The joint works because it is continuous. Instead of pinching the pane at a few clamps, the bond runs the whole way round the edge and spreads pressure and suction along it, so nothing is concentrated where the glass is weakest. The engineer sizes that joint for the pane and the exposure it faces, and a mechanical restraint sits behind it so the unit cannot leave the frame even if the bond were damaged. It is a designed connection, not glue.

Because you cannot control a bench that is hanging off a rope. A structural bond needs a clean, primed face, a stable temperature and humidity while it cures, and time before the unit is moved — none of which a live elevation offers, and none of which can be inspected afterwards by looking at it. So the pane and its frame arrive already married, and site work is anchoring, alignment and the weather joint.

As a unit. The glass and the carrier frame come out together and a replacement pair goes back in, because separating a bonded pane from its frame is workshop work, not something done on an access platform. That is why the fabrication drawing is kept with the job record: the replacement is ordered to the original sizes and reaches site in the usual 3–5 weeks from approval.

Structural silicone is specified to sit in ultraviolet light, because on a bonded facade the edge of the joint is exposed at the perimeter of every pane. The failures people actually point at are different: a weather joint that was never properly tooled and pulled away at a corner, or a bond made onto a face that was wiped rather than cleaned. Both are workmanship, and both are why we do the bonding ourselves.
