Glazing for schools and institutions

Buildings used by children and the public are specified differently from homes, and the differences are not cosmetic. Glass that stays in place when broken, openings that cannot be climbed through, hardware built for thousands of cycles, and a programme that fits around the people using the building.

  • laminated where people are
  • restricted opening on reachable sashes
  • term dates the programme fits them

We produce

Curtain walls, structural and semi-structural glazing, ventilated and cassette facades. The system carries its own weight and the wind load of a tall building, and the glass line stays unbroken across the elevation.

How we work on an occupied building

  • Survey with the facilities team, not just the drawings Engineer on site within 48 hours
  • Programme built around term dates and exam periods Heavier work planned for holidays
  • Zones handed over room by room, not a whole floor at once The building keeps running
  • Site rules, passes and safeguarding requirements confirmed first Institutions have their own access regime
  • Each day planned to end with the openings made safe Sequenced so nothing is left open overnight
  • Handover with hardware settings recorded for the maintenance team Restrictor keys and adjustment points documented

Partitions

Office partitions made of aluminium profiles are a simple, quick, and cost-effective way to organise efficient zoning within a large space, while maintaining interior unity.

The honest downside

What an institutional specification costs

Restrictors keep a sash from opening wide enough to climb through, which also means the room gets only a limited amount of fresh air through its windows. A classroom that relies on them for ventilation will lean on its mechanical system more than a home would.

Laminated glass and heavy-duty hardware make each pane and leaf heavier and each opening more expensive, and large clear areas bring glare onto boards and screens unless the glass and the blinds are chosen with the room layout in mind.

In a family home the same worries are usually answered with child-safety fittings on ordinary windows: restrictors, lockable handles and laminated panes where a child can reach. The full institutional specification belongs where children and the public use the building every day.

Frequently asked questions

Because of what happens after a break. Toughened glass shatters completely and leaves an open hole; laminated glass cracks and stays in the frame, held by its interlayer. In a corridor full of children that difference is the entire point. Laminated-toughened combines both properties and is the usual specification.

Yes, with restrictors that limit how far a sash travels. The opening ventilates the room without leaving a gap a child could pass through, and staff can release it with a key when full opening is needed for cleaning. Restrictors should be specified per sash rather than assumed, since requirements differ between a nursery and a university.

Yes, in zones, and most of the heavier work is better placed in holidays. We programme around term and exam dates, work room by room, and plan each day so the openings are made safe before the site closes. Access passes, site inductions and safeguarding rules are confirmed before the first delivery rather than on the morning of it.

Yes. The requirements overlap: laminated glass, restricted opening, robust hardware and an installation that respects an occupied building. What changes is the detail — a nursery pushes finger protection and low-level safety harder, a clinic often adds privacy glazing and stricter dust control during the work.
