Homes

Three sources are typical at home: a motorway that never empties, aircraft queueing over the city, and a plot next door that started work before anyone was awake. They are not one problem with one answer. Steady traffic arrives as a low, continuous push and aircraft come in bursts, yet a window is rated against both by the same figure, Rw + Ctr, and for both it is mass, damping and tight joints that raise it; aircraft also strike the roof and the balcony soffit as well as the glass. A building site is impact — sudden, irregular and the hardest of the three to live beside. Establishing which of them you actually have is the first job, because it decides whether new windows are even the right purchase.

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

Deciding what a home actually needs

  • We listen at the hour that bothers you Rush hour and a site start are not alike
  • Frame and hardware tested before glass is discussed A sash that has dropped cannot be sealed
  • Reveal opened at one spot to see the joint Foam, a void, or nothing at all
  • Balcony door examined alongside the window Usually the leakier of the pair
  • The three routes costed side by side Reseal, replace, or add a second frame
  • Approvals checked where the elevation changes The management company decides, not us

The honest downside

Where window work will not make a home quiet

Some noise never comes through the glass. A neighbour's television through a party wall, footsteps on the slab above, the bass from a venue or the hum of a generator carried through the structure — none of it changes with new windows or a second frame, however well they are sealed.

Quiet also has a cost in air. A home made tight against a motorway only stays quiet with the sashes shut, so fresh air has to come some other way, and on a pleasant evening it means choosing between a breeze and the traffic.

If the noise is inside the home — a family room next to a bedroom, a home office by the living room — a dense door set with a drop threshold does more than any window. Window work is the right answer when the source is outside and reaches you through the glass and the gaps around it.

Consider instead Acoustic doors

Frequently asked questions

It depends entirely on the frame, and it is a genuine fork rather than a sales line. Where the profile is straight, the hinges still carry the sash and the trouble is perished gaskets, worn locking points and a reveal that was never packed, resealing gets most of the available improvement for a fraction of the outlay. Where the frame has twisted, the sash no longer meets the rebate along its length, or the opening was glazed with a single thin sheet, sealing it only makes a tight bad window. We test the sash on a strip of paper at several points around the perimeter before saying which of those you own.

It is an additional window set inside the reveal behind the existing one, with a generous air space left between them, and it wins in three situations: when the outer window is in decent order and only middling on noise, when nothing on the elevation may be altered because the facade is the management company's to approve, and when you are renting and cannot touch the building fabric. The wide gap between two independent sashes does work a single unit rarely matches. The cost of it is practical, not financial — two things to open on a fine evening and four surfaces to clean instead of two.

It shifts it, though not towards a different kind of glass. Aircraft and traffic are rated by the same figure, Rw + Ctr, and for both a laminated pane with a damping interlayer does more than simply thickening the glass. What changes is the direction: aircraft noise arrives from above, so in a villa the roof, the soffit over a balcony and any rooflight are part of the story in a way they never are with a road. We will say when the limiting element is above your head rather than in the wall, because at that point a window quotation is not the honest answer to the question you asked.

Weigh it against how long you intend to stay and what condition the windows are in anyway. If they were tired before the excavator arrived, the site has simply made you notice, and the work you were going to do eventually is now worth doing sooner. If they are sound, the proportionate answer is the reversible one: reseal, add an inner frame that can come out later, and put a denser door on the bedroom you are trying to sleep in. What we would not recommend is re-glazing a whole villa to outlast a neighbour's contractor.
