Sliding partitions

A sliding partition is a wall you can put away. Glazed panels hang from a track fixed above the ceiling, run along it and park in a bay at one end or swing out of the line — a majlis opens into the living room for a gathering and closes again afterwards, a restaurant makes a private room out of whichever corner it needs tonight. Because the panels hang rather than stand, the floor stays flush, with no channel to trip over or to fill with sand. That puts everything onto the track and onto what the track is fixed to: a soffit that flexes will be felt in every panel that crosses it.

The honest downside

Does the room really need a moving wall?

A moving wall earns its cost only if the room really changes shape. If it stays closed almost all the time, or open almost all the time, you are paying for a track, carriers, seals and a parking bay that do nothing most days.

The mechanism also needs looking after. Every panel rides on carriers that wear, the track has to stay dead level on a stiff soffit, and the parked panels take up a bay of floor or wall that cannot be used for anything else. Closed, it is quieter than an open room but not as quiet as a fixed screen.

Where the room is nearly always divided the same way, a fixed glass partition with a door is simpler, cheaper and seals better. A sliding partition is right for a majlis, a function room or a restaurant that genuinely opens and closes around its guests.

Consider instead Glass partitions

Frequently asked questions

Quieter than an open room and not as quiet as a built wall — that is the honest range. The seals only make contact in the closed position, and there is a vertical joint every panel width, so there are more paths for sound than a fixed screen has. You can improve it a great deal with heavier panels, better edge seals and a drop seal at the floor, but a wall you can push aside will never match one you cannot.

Top-hung, wherever the structure above allows it. A channel in the floor collects sand, dust and spilled drinks, it has to be cleaned out to keep running, and it interrupts a stone or timber floor with a line people catch their feet on. Hanging the panels puts all of that overhead where it is hidden, and the floor stays a single surface. A small guide is used at the bottom only where a panel needs restraint.

Into a parking bay that has to be designed into the room from the beginning: a pocket in a wall, a return at right angles to the run, or a stack against a column. This is the part people forget, and it is the difference between a wall that truly disappears and one that leaves a stubborn cluster of glass standing in the opening it was supposed to clear.

Not this one. A moveable partition is an internal product — its seals, its track and its glass are not there to hold weather out, and put on an external line it will let wind, dust and rain past. For a terrace the right answer is either a sealed sliding system with insulated units, or a frameless screen if the aim is only to break the wind. We will say which one your opening actually needs.
