Frameless glass pool fence on stainless spigots around a villa swimming pool in Dubai, with a self-closing glass gate

Pool fencing

A pool fence is not a balustrade and it is not a screen. It exists to keep a small child away from water without an adult present, and every decision in it is judged against that one test rather than against the view. Which is why the questions are unusual: not how thin the posts can be, but whether anything beside the line can be climbed, whether a toddler fits under a panel or between two of them, and above all whether the gate shuts and catches by itself after somebody has walked through it carrying towels. Toughened glass and slim spigots are the easy part. The gate and its hardware are what the fence lives or dies by.

  • set by your community the height
  • self-closing and self-latching the gate
  • chlorine and salt what attacks the hardware

Why choose aluminium windows?

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with three EPDM seal contours highlighted in red

    Durable EPDM seals

Three contours of EPDM seals keep the glass off the aluminium and close the gap between sash and frame, so dust, humid salt air and wind-driven rain stay outside.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with a foamed thermal insert highlighted

    Foamed thermal inserts

Foamed inserts fill the profile chambers and stop air circulating inside them, so less outside heat and street noise passes through the frame into the cooled room.

  • Aluminium window profile cross-section with polyamide thermal breaks highlighted

    Polyamide thermal breaks

Glass-filled polyamide thermal breaks up to 40 mm wide keep the outer and inner shells apart, so the frame holds its shape and its insulation through a UAE summer.

  • Aluminium window profile with an energy-efficient double glazing unit highlighted

    Energy-efficient double glazing

Double glazing up to 60 mm thick puts a sealed gap of still air or gas between the hot street and the cooled room, so less heat crosses the glass into the room.

How a pool barrier is built

  • Community and authority rules read first They set the height and the gaps
  • Line walked for anything climbable A planter or a bin defeats a good fence
  • Deck build-up opened at each fixing Anchors pass through waterproofing
  • Gate position and swing settled Out of the way of the busiest route
  • Panels set, plumbed and sighted along Gaps checked pane by pane
  • Gate released from every angle and tested It has to shut and catch each time

Partitions

Office partitions made of aluminium profiles are a simple, quick, and cost-effective way to organise efficient zoning within a large space, while maintaining interior unity.

The honest downside

What a glass pool fence will not do

A fence is a barrier, not supervision. It keeps a small child away from the water only while the gate is shut and latched and nothing climbable stands against it, so it works alongside an adult's attention rather than in place of it.

Glass also needs more care than people expect. Splashes, chlorine and hard water leave marks on both faces, sprinklers spot the lower edge, and a fence that is not rinsed regularly stops looking like clear glass and starts looking like a row of dirty panels.

Where the view across the pool matters less — along a side path, behind planting or at the boundary — an aluminium barrier with bar infill, built to the same rules, is quieter to own. Glass is the better choice where the fence runs across the main view from the house and someone will keep it clean.

Consider instead Aluminium railings

Frequently asked questions

Usually the gate. Panels are static and they either fit the rules or they do not, but a gate is a machine that gets used wet, hot and in a hurry, and it fails quietly: a hinge stiffens, somebody wedges it while carrying loungers, the latch wears until it needs a push to catch. So we test it by letting it go from part open as well as wide open, since a gate that swings shut from full travel and stalls halfway from a small angle is the exact failure that matters. After that comes the second test — walking the outside of the line looking for anything a child could climb, which is usually furniture, a planter or a bin that arrived long after we did.

We do not decide that, and neither should the fence contractor. The height, the gaps and the gate arrangement are set by your community rules and by the authority for your emirate, so we read them before drawing anything and set out to them. What we can tell you is where fences commonly fail an inspection even when the height is right: the space under a panel on a deck that falls away, and the gap where a run turns a corner or meets a wall that is out of plumb.

A pool fence panel is standing against a child, not holding anybody back from a drop, so toughened glass held in spigots or a base shoe is the normal build and the one the hardware is made for. Where the same line also guards a level change — a raised deck, a step down to a garden — it stops being only a pool fence and the specification changes with it. Either way the panels are set so any one of them can be released and replaced on its own, because a pane at deck level meets sun loungers, service trolleys and gardeners' machinery for its whole life.

Everything that moves, and it is chemistry rather than weather. Chlorine comes off the water as vapour and settles on the hardware just above it, and near the coast salt does the same, so hinges, latches and the fixings inside a spigot are attacked long before the glass shows anything at all. We specify marine-grade components, ask for the hardware to be rinsed with fresh water when the deck is washed, and tell owners what the early warning is: a gate that has begun to need a nudge to catch is not a nuisance, it is the barrier no longer working.
