Office pods

A pod is a small room built almost entirely out of the material that normally leaks. Glass on three or four faces, a glass door, a junction where the panels meet the carpet and another where they disappear into the ceiling void — with an office all round that has to carry on working. Two details decide whether staff book the thing or avoid it. Whether the door is pressed onto its seal by the latch rather than merely resting against it, and whether air is actively pushed through. A sealed box with no supply turns stuffy quickly, somebody wedges the door, and the acoustic argument is over.

  • glazed all round the walls
  • latched shut the door
  • forced supply ventilation

What a pod is assembled from

  • Laminated

    Glazed panels

    Damped sheet, not plain float

  • Compressing

    Door and latch

Pulled onto the gasket, not left touching

  • Never brush

    Door edges

A wiping strip leaves an open channel

  • Lined run

    Ventilation

A straight duct is a speaking tube

  • Closed off

    Floor and ceiling lines

    Carpet beneath, open void above

We produce

Curtain walls, structural and semi-structural glazing, ventilated and cassette facades. The system carries its own weight and the wind load of a tall building, and the glass line stays unbroken across the elevation.

Placing a pod on a working floor

  • Position checked against the ceiling grid The void above is a shared corridor
  • Floor build-up confirmed before delivery Raised access floors drum underfoot
  • Panels glazed and every junction sealed Including the ones nobody will see
  • Door hung, then re-set once it has settled Compression is even or it is nothing
  • Supply air connected and attenuated Ducting bent and lined, never straight
  • Assembly can be scheduled outside office hours Timing agreed with the building

Partitions

Office partitions made of aluminium profiles are a simple, quick, and cost-effective way to organise efficient zoning within a large space, while maintaining interior unity.

The honest downside

Before you put a pod on the floor

A pod is a booth, not a meeting room. It suits a call or a short conversation; a team that meets every day around a screen soon outgrows it, and a queue for the booth becomes a complaint of its own.

It also stands inside someone else's building. A closed booth under a sprinklered ceiling may need its own fire detection or the landlord's fit-out approval, it takes floor area and daylight from the desks around it, and placed by a sunny facade, a small glass box warms up quickly.

For regular meetings, where the floor plan allows it, glass partitions forming a proper meeting room give more space with the same glazed look. A pod remains the right choice where the lease rules out building work, or where the booth may need to move with the company.

Frequently asked questions

Because it is the only part that has to move. Every other panel can be bedded, glued and sealed once and left alone, while the door has a running gap on all four edges that must open easily and shut tightly, which are opposite requirements. Many disappointing pods fail at one detail: the latch merely holds the leaf near the frame instead of drawing it hard onto the gasket, so there is a hairline of air the whole way round. Magnetic catches, a properly adjusted keep and a bar that lowers at the foot are what turn a closed door into a sealed one.

You can, and people will soon stop using it. Carbon dioxide climbs and the temperature with it, and the first person to feel it props the door with a chair — at which point the pod is an alcove. So the supply is designed in from the start, and then treated as an acoustic route in its own right, because a straight tube between the pod and the ceiling void carries a conversation beautifully. The run is bent, lined and given an attenuator, so the air arrives and the voices do not.

They will hear that somebody is speaking. With laminated panels and a door that genuinely compresses, ordinary conversation drops to an indistinct murmur that the office background covers, and words stop being recoverable. Raised voices are different — a heated call carries, and so does a speakerphone turned up. We say this plainly because it decides what the booth is for: it is right for calls, interviews and focus, and it is not the room for a dismissal or a salary review unless it has been built up well beyond the standard specification.

It is bolted and sealed rather than built in, so it can be dismantled and re-erected on another floor. What has to be redone on arrival is precisely the acoustic part: gaskets replaced rather than reused, the base sealed to the new floor finish, the head sealed at the new ceiling line, and the door re-tuned once the frame has taken the weight again. A pod moved by trolley and simply pushed back into place will be noticeably worse than it was, and the reason is usually one of those four joints.
