Observation window between the control room and the live room of a recording studio in Dubai

Recording studios

A studio brief is not written as "quieter". It is written as a target the room has to hold with a microphone live, and every element is judged against that one line. Our share of it is the openings: the observation glazing between control room and live room, the door that people are in and out of all session, and the external windows the street is leaning on. What we will not claim is that openings make a studio. Decoupled linings, a floating floor and the ceiling hung off them are acoustic building work by other trades, and without them the best window in the wall is a spectator.

How a studio opening is put together

  • Two frames

    Observation window

    Nothing rigid bridges the two

  • Splayed

    Pane setting

    Panes tilted out of parallel

  • Damped pair

    Glass

    Laminated, and never matched

  • Resilient

    Frame fixings

    Packed, not screwed hard through

  • Two leaves

We produce

Curtain walls, structural and semi-structural glazing, ventilated and cassette facades. The system carries its own weight and the wind load of a tall building, and the glass line stays unbroken across the elevation.

What we take on, and what we hand over

  • Target read off the acoustician's drawing We build to it, not instead of it
  • Wall build-up confirmed at each opening A decoupled leaf needs its own frame
  • Frames set on resilient packings No hard path back into the structure
  • Observation glazing made as a matched pair Two frames, two panes, one reveal
  • Door sets hung and tuned for even compression Checked corner by corner by hand
  • Cable and duct penetrations flagged to the fit-out They are the next route in, and not ours

The honest downside

Where studio glazing is not the first spend

Openings are the last layer of a studio, not the first. Until the floor, the wall leaves and the ceiling are isolated, a two-frame observation window has nothing to hold its performance against, and the money does more in the room shell.

The glass also brings its own problems into the room. A large pane is a hard, reflective surface that the acoustic design has to account for, and the double frame takes wall depth and adds weight the partition must carry. In a small project studio or a home edit suite, some engineers do without an observation window altogether and work with a camera and a monitor.

For a small room where one door is the main weak point, a proper acoustic door set is usually the better first spend. Observation glazing is the right answer when the shell is isolated and the control room and live room genuinely need to see each other.

Consider instead Acoustic doors

Frequently asked questions

No, and we would rather say so at the enquiry than at handover. We manufacture and install openings — glazing, door sets, frames and their sealing — to the specification your acoustic designer issues. The rooms themselves are made by others: the floating floor, the independent wall leaves, the suspended ceiling, the ductwork and the way services cross between them. Verification is a consultant's job with their own instruments. A studio's result cannot be guaranteed on the strength of its windows.

Because thickness alone gives sound a rigid path straight across. Two frames, each carried by its own wall leaf with an air space between them and no hard contact anywhere, force the energy to cross that gap twice and lose out at every change. It is the same reasoning as the wall around it, and it fails the moment somebody bridges the cavity with a fixing or a bead of hard mastic. The panes are also set out of parallel with one another, which keeps sound from bouncing back and forth in the cavity and colouring what the engineer hears.

It is the better answer where the plan allows it, because two modest leaves and a small vestibule outperform one very heavy leaf and are far pleasanter to walk through all day. Where the floor plan has no room to give, a single set does the job: dense leaf, compression seals on all four edges, automatic threshold, and a frame rigid enough not to flex when the latch pulls it in. What decides it is usually circulation, not acoustics — a lobby has to be big enough that both doors are never open at once.

They cannot, and it is worth being blunt about it. Footsteps and moved furniture enter the slab as vibration and re-radiate inside your ceiling; they never pass through your window at all, so no glazing specification touches them. That is isolation work — a floating floor upstairs or a resiliently hung ceiling on your side — and it belongs to the acoustic contractor. We flag it when we survey, because a studio that was quiet on the day of the test and noisy on the first Saturday morning is often this.
